    New Detective Special

I recently picked up a used DS in 3rd issue that was used and I would consider the blueing and finish to be VG. Functionally it seems fine. I got it for a fair price(around $300) which reflected the cosmetic flaws. I have a few questons that I would appreciate feedback from you colt guys.

    1. I was considering a re blue but I have never seen one that looked like it just rolled out of the factory. I will probably carry this at times and the cosmetics don't bother me but I was thinking of value enhancement. ??

    2. On several S&W J frames I have always done a complete cleaning including taking the cylinder off and cleaning the yoke and plunger.Don't know if this is good idea on DS or not. I assume the screw just below the trigger is the release point ? If it is I cannot budge it.

    3. Was considering taking to a gunsmith for a tune and timing check since I do know history. Is the $100+ tab worth it ?

Thanks for your time and thoughts.

Refinishing is generally not a value enhancement. Although many will tell you that Colt does a good job, it still would not be the same as it rolled out of the factory originally.

A good cleaning and lubing is a good idea. What appears to be a large screw on the right side is actually a threaded cap containing the spring loaded crane detent. If you have done some S&W disassembly, I might presume you have the correct size hollow ground screwdrivers to avoid damage to the slots and heads. It is not really necessary to remove the crane to clean the cylinder and ejector adequately, but it is certainly reasonable to want to be able to. Some soaking with penetrating oil such as Kroil, firmly securing the revolver, and extra downward force with the correct screwdriver to avoid slot damage would be a start. If you are not comfortable with that, perhaps a good gunsmith is better equipped for that task. However, many gunsmiths these days are not experienced with the older Colts and anything beyond typical gunsmith procedures can result in more problems than solutions, especially since parts are scarce. Most favor returning them to Colt for actual repair.

I appreciate the imput Searcher as I believe that answered my question. After pricing re blueing and some smithing, the tab would be what I paid + 50% more with little to no value enhancement. So I will keep it as is and what I bought it for-A fine piece to carry on person or in the car with no worry of losing an expensive gun.

Colt does a clean/lube and service for, I believe, $50.00. Included is retiming, if needed. I've had a couple done and it was worth it. Little things like re-polishing the sides of the hammer is also done. You'll get back a functionally pristine revolver.

I just sent two Dick Specials to Colt for work. One to have a new mainspring installed and the other to have the hammer bobbed & made DAO. Both had perfect timing IMO. Cost was $95 & $180 respectively incl. cleaning, lube, check POA, etc. Fair price IMO.

IMO a refinish is usually a waste of time & money.
