    Coltguard

    Hey folks,

Does anyone have a gun that has a factory Coltguard finish?

If so, could you post a picture of it? I'm still batting around what finish is on my gun. Many think it is hard chrome, but some parts are "dull", not shiny. The gun in question is a 1978/79 Colt Combat Commander Model. I had a post on the auto loading pistol section with pictures a couple of weeks ago.

    Thanks for any input.

In the 1978 and 1979 catalogs, the Combat Commander was offered only in Colt Blue (all calibers) or nickel (45ACP only). To me, that implies bright electrolytic nickel, but that might be reading a lot into a catalog entry. In the 1980 catalog, the Combat Commander is offered in Colt Blue and Satin Nickel (45 ACP only). In the 1981 catalog, which introduced "Coltguard" for revolvers only, the Combat Commander was offered in Colt Blue and Satin Nickel (45 ACP only). I have been told that by satin nickel, Colt meant a brushed electrolytic nickel. There have been many claims and much speculation on the nickel finishes. I wish someone (really) knew for sure.

In 1971?? Colt introduced the Combat Commander all steel model.
It was available in blue and a satin plated finish usually described as a satin nickel.

These models had serial numbers that included "BS" for the blued models, and "SC" for the plated guns.
"SC" has been taken to mean satin chrome, but the finish itself looks and wear more like an electroless nickel.

Actual Coltguard wasn't introduced for years later.
