Looking at both guns. Is the special combat worth the additional cost? Will be using the gun for range work and home defense. I really want night sights, and they are only available from the factory on the Special Combat model 01970CY. I'm assuming I could add night sights to an XSE. Thoughts, opinions? Thanks!

I bought 2 guns from a guy today and before I left I went and looked at the pistol case where he has a bunch of 1911's and A1's. Most have had something done to them so I usually buzz by. Today however he had one that looked very original with a serial number of 795,044. I dissasembled in the store and the slide matches. The barrel is HS marked. Magazine is an R marked mag. Grips are correct plastic. Gun still had 70% of the finish remaining with mostly holster wear. Gun was a consignment gun. The owner wants $3800.00 for the gun. I just don't think its worth it. Maybe I'm wrong. You guys know me, It's gotta have some meat on it. Don't wanna pay more than its worth....(sorry, no pics right now).

Bores display strong lands and grooves and are bright shiny, mechanically sound and functional with honest wear bluing loss more evident on the bottom 2 but for pistols over 90 years old I'm pretty pleased and the three together cost me less than a 90% Python without the box of course (last years prices) I'm a shooter :) Once I get them final prepped for Eezox we're good to go. Hope y'all approve though my camera skills are still as bad as ever :p

I've acquired a Pocket Hammer that has British proofs on the slide- one just below the circled logo on the left rear of the slide, the other on the right side just to the rear of the ejection port. I understand that the proofs usually, but not always, also appeared on the barrel and frame. These are not present. Is there any way to determine via shipping records/serial #s (22744) if this pistol indeed went to London, or if the frame and slide were just switched out at some point? It is an un-numbered slide correct for this range, and the condition/patina of the frame and slide are a match. Any information would be appreciated!

I know, we ask this question a thousand times..........What is the fair market value of a 90% condition Remington Rand 1911A1?
My friend is looking at one and brought it to me to check out for him. I disassembled it and looked at everything on the "coolgunsite" web page. It totally checks out as a 1943 built RR with a Flannery Bolt Co. barrel and a "Little" built mag. The person selling it wants $1500. Is that a fair price or too much? I personally know revolvers better than semi-autos.
Thank you for your help;

I have a Colt MK IV Series 80 in stainless steel.

I've been considering some upgrades like a trigger job and some adjustable sights.

Lately I've seen some new Colt Gold Cup Trophy and Gold Cup National match guns that appear to already have these upgrades. I have a friend that has offered to buy my Series 80 if I decide to buy a Gold Cup.

So, I guess I have two questions:

1.) Would I be better off upgrading my current Series 80 or buying a Gold Cup ?

2.) Just what are the differences between the Gold Cup Trophy and the Gold Cup National Match ?

I've searched the forums and have seen question#2 asked before. I've been unable to find a satisfactory answer to this question. Responders always seem to derail the question and send it down a bunny trail. No one ever gets around to providing a comparison list of the features of the two models.

Can you guys help ?

You guys were so helpful with the red mottled 1911 grips I thought I would turn to you for one more thing. I know Ropers are expensive in great condition however most sets I see to compare prices are for revolvers. I have a set that came to me on a 1936 vintage Woodsman. Generally good condition.
The left side has some lose of checkering along the top of and at the rear of the small thumbrest, also a small slit about 1/8 inch at the front strap where the sides meet. The right side has a small sliver missing at the bach strap about 1/16' deep by 1/2 ' long again where the sides meet (thinst part of the grips. I am getting redeady to sell of some colt parts I don't need or want and want to be fair on the pricing. I also have a Steadman Stabilizer I will posting for sale and need pricing on. Pretty good shape 2 of the 3 screws are slightly buggered. How much is it worth?

Looking for production numbers for this gun. Previous owner claimed less than 200. I think it came out around 1990 or so. 3 1/2", full mag (7rds), Colt Custon shop grips. Matt finish, marked "Tank Officers 45 ACP" on the slide. It is a Series 80. Thanks, Jim.

WEll, I did find some info on this gun on the net. Seems they were made for Jerry's Sport Center, a dist. 350 were planned, but according to Colt, 250 were made. Pays to look before I leap, Jim.

Wanted to share some pics and info on my new 1911 Colt Commander designed by Wiley Clapp. A little picture heavy but wanted to show detail.

The (TALO) pistol is a result of efforts between both W. Clapp and Colt. The pistol is a 70 series not the series 80 style passive firing pin safety mechanism design. The pistol weighs in at 25 oz.

The ejection port is fluted and cleared and is moderately lowered to a height of 0.0470 inches. The slide has both front and rear serration and is forged, carbon steel with a rounded top. The slide has a polished, black oxide finish on the flats and a matte black finish on the top. The frame is aluminum alloy. The 4.25 inch barrel is a non ramped National Match barrel.

A moderate bevel is machined into the mouth of the magazine well to facilitate mag insertion. The front strap is machined and checkered at 25 l.p.i. radius where it meets the trigger guard appears to be somewhat reduced, allowing a higher hand position. Colt sends the frame out to Pete Single for the machining of the front strap. The safety is the old WW1 style. The finger print checkering on the grips is considered ugly at best by some but is very comfortable and functional.

The flat Smith and Alexander mainspring housing is steel and is checkered at a 20 l.p.i.

The tactical grip is designed by Clapp and manufactured by Altamount Inc. The oval design is very comfortable in the hand.

The front sight is 0.125 inch wide and it is slightly ramped in the face with a 0.077 inch diameter brass bead. It is mounted via a traverse dovetail.

The rear Novak Lo-Mount fixed sight has a 0.170 inch wide notch which is to allow for faster sight acquisition and function better in low light conditions. It is adjustable for windage.

The trigger is yet to be commented on. Once I shoot the commander I will offer some feedback. My first impression is how good the gun feels in the hand and how light it is. I am hoping it shoots as well as it feels.

Hi Yall. I have 2 questions for the forum. I have my new (to me!) barrel and fixed my screw up on the hammer reassembly (thank you Colt forum!) on 1903 .32. First, can I get a slide, barrel, recoil spring, and magazine and make my .32 and dual caliber? From what I’ve read, that’s the only difference. I’d like to get a .380 short barrel slide set up so I can use this weapon in both. It's a shooter so what the hell! And one more question. I tried Colt a couple of weeks ago and Joe was out. I’m going to try him again this week. About how long does it take to have Colt check the build sheet, if available? Like I said in my previous post, for $70 I have to try!!! Thanks yall.
