I have a Model 1881 cavalry holster with my
martial-marked SAA. The holster is marked "Rock Island Arsenal" and "E.H.S." on
the flap but the initials "F.O.B." (the last two initials are a little weak so
they may not be correct) also appear at the end of the flap, just below the two
holes for the stud. Does anyone know what these initials stand for?
E.H. Schmitten Leather Goods, Rock Island are the inspectors initials. Go to www.proofhouse.com to see more. Not sure about FOB. It's common to see initials there though. It looks like you have a nice one there. Welcome to the forum. Would you like to show us that Colt too?
Here it is, an 1884-marked Frank Heath inspected Cavalry SAA. Both it and the holster are in excellent condition. The Colt was reblued a LONG time ago and most of that finish is now gone. I have both the Colt and Kopec letters on it and Kopec says the bore is in "as unfired" condition.
For what it is worth, I have 4 of the .38 Colt 1894 model holster that have the markings on the flap front like yours. In 1903 the markings were moved to the back. These 4 have the following markings:
Date / INSP/FLAP TIP
None-pre 1895/ EHS ???/ (can't read)
None-pre 1902/ HEK/ F??
1903/ HEK/ PG
1903/ ???/ HD
