    Good Value Gun Books

    I'm mostly into pre-1911 automatics - soooo --

Many gun books at gunebooks.com. A downloaded book costs about $7, a best-value, with many diagrams, photos, history etc. Titles for the 1900, 02 & 03s, 1911 & many other Colts. Many other gun books you can read it in your computer or print it for your library. A very different website.

Colt's .38 Automatic Pistols by Douglas G. Sheldon, offers a huge amount of info, photos, history, etc from the 1900 thru the 1903 Hammer.

The Colt Model 1905 Automatic Pistol by John Potocki

The Government Models by Goddard covers the 1900 thru the basic 1911. Heavy on detail and history with info, photos, history, etc. Pages of serial numbers of guns shipped to celebrities, dealers, etc with notations such as engr, pearl, etc.

Just as I am doing with my guns, I'm trying to explain why the books I've accumulated are important to me. A work in progress!

I want to put a plug in for the good old standard reference work Cartridges of the World (any edition). This is one useful reference work I keep pulling out at least once a week. Every gun library needs at least one copy.

2 of my first "gun books" as a young pre-teen were the Smith "Book of Pistols and Revolvers" & "The Book of Rifles" . I turned those pages many times over dreaming of guns I couldn't own .

Can I assume the The Book of Colt Firearms (Sutherland & Wilson) is out of print since the least expensive copy I can find of the 3rd edition is $140.00?

How good is the Blue Book Colt Pocket serial number reference?

By far the most valuable gun book I ever read was called

Shotgunning: The Art and the Science

    http://www.amazon.com/Shotgunning-Ar.../dp/0832918407

It is both hilarious and fun to read, and has more gun wisdom in it than you can imagine. If you practice what he says, you will be very good with a shotgun almost immediately. Then you can apply what he says about instinctive shooting to handguns and see a dramatic improvement there, too. Ths\is book is WAY cheaper than night sights or laser grips, and just as effective.

The next thing is not widely available, but also worth reading. It is what Jack Weaver actually said about shooting, not just the shape of the stance as repeated superficially by instructors everywhere. He had some very insightful things to say about gripping, etc. that make a big difference and are almost always overlooked. Fortunately American Handgunner had an article on this a few years ago, and in it is a link to Weaver's son's website, which offers copies of his writing.

    http://findarticles.com/p/articles/m...g=content;col1

    Happy shooting, folks.
