    First the Excitement

    Then the disappointment-

For Christmas I recieved one of the NRA etched glass 1911 commerative placques which is quite nice until you realize the firearm represented is a Springfield not a Colt.

To rub salt in the wound-

I also received a copy of The First 100 Years by Sweeney. With joy in my heart I opened it and quickly realized the first Firearm pictured is a Kimber, the second firearm pictured is a Taurus. It is not until page 16 that a picture of a Colt shows up. As I flipped through the pages I find that there is a fair amount of this book on 1911 dedicated to revolvers. WTF how could a book on the history of a semi-automatic pistol designed by JM Browning and originally manufactured by Colt leave both of the designer and the manufacturer as seeming afterthoughts.

As my father used to say 'dont judge a book by its cover'

Despite our affinity for the rearing pony, we must realize that the benchmark for the 1911 was set by Springfield, and given that Colt's innate superiority was head and shoulders above the initial production, Springfield was "first".

As to the book, it is not unusual for ignorant (uneducated) editors to to overlook details that loom large to us in the shooting fraternity -- how often do you read about a silencer being affixed to a revolver, etc . . . ?
