She's going to have lots of trouble. I hope the NRA or somebody steps in with some legal help. A legal Aid lawyer might not be of much help.

Its unfortunate that New York City has some of the toughest gun laws in the country. Unfortunately she'll be in for a hell of an ordeal, especially with a public defender...

I live in NY State. There are non-reciprocation laws for very good reason. And like any law, including traffic violations, they will sometimes end with a technical illegality and a charge that will then be taken up to the DA to keep, drop, whatever and the courts to uphold or dismiss if he goes ahead with the charge and prosecutes. The woman will not end up with a felony trial and conviction. It will "go away" in the initial process. But she will have expenses and time and the rest of it. However, she was at fault for not checking what is posted all over sites and the laws of different states. And a police office is not going to allow anyone to continue on with a loaded gun because they seem nice but clueless.

As to why I'm glad we don't have reciprocity: the checks for permits to carry in enough states to matter are loose. I don't want the person next to me or my family with a loaded gun to have had a cursory check and a carry-permit issued in a week. It takes more time and energy to get a driver's license. This violates no one's rights to own a gun if they are legally acting citizens. (As the Supreme Court has found). It just checks well that they are. But others have rights, not to be sitting next to anyone with loaded gun who hasn't had the same process applied and may be a danger - could be.

Reciprocity is fine if there are standards among the group granting it. But the same who cry the loudest: "Reciprocity!" would never allow that to happen - So, fine: if you want local standards, have them. But don't think everyone else must import them when you hang out in their communtiy. That denies to others the standards they want as much as you want yours.

Graves has a legal permit to carry a weapon in Tennessee, but New York's gun laws are stricter.

    ...understatement of the year

Instead, you'd prefer your family to sit disarmed next to God-knows-what on a NYC subway?

    hmmmm....let me see

    Choose 1:

    A. A citizen who has complied with regulations to legally own a handgun
    B. A citizen who cares nothing about complying with gun laws

I'll gladly seat my family next to "A" above, thank you.

You're welcome to take your chances with the latter.

I still find it interesting that with all the "strict" (some say "Draconian") gun laws in New York City, there are still far more murders and much more gun-violence in NYC per capita than ALMOST anywhere else in the US.

I lived over 25 years in NY, Long Island. It's a place that proves 'with gun control, only honest citizens are controlled'. Plenty of guns available but don't get caught with one. I got a pistol license, took 6 months for proofs that would qualify a person for sainthood. Had to take it down to the PD to have its S/N verified every two years and pay again. Home storage required it be under lock and key, etc.

I recall a case where a man had a flare pistol that got stolen, he reported it to police, pistol was used in a holdup, nobody shot, perp caught, gun recovered, original owner charged with gun possession. No jail time, only about $15K lawyer expenses.
