    Question Correct WWII 1911A1 finish?

First, I admit to knowing less than nothing about this subject. What would be the correct finish for a WWII era 1911A1? Parkerized with plastic grips? May I assume that all USA military pistols would be finished the same, regardless of manufacturer?

The finish could either be original or could have gone through an arsenal for repair/refinish after seeing action during the war.
In both cases, probably some sort of parkerizing and certainly not high polish blue finish. The parkeriing finish could easily vary between manufactuers and even military arsenals.
If you want to learn more than you ever wanted to know about the M1911, there is also a forum for just that firearm.

    First, consult Clawson book -

Secondly, it important to understand that the way that the metal was prepared and the types of finishes used changed as the war went on,
so you cant make a broad statement that covers all WW2 1911A1's - not even the Colts!

Thirdly, there is no substitute for hands-on study of known originals - and that means networking in with advanced collectors who are willing to share information.

Forth, a serial number will go a long way toward getting knowledgeable opinions about the pistol in question.

    Fifth; Good Luck

Thanks, guys. I was just looking for general information, not particular to one pistol, or make. Let me rephrase the question. Would a parkerized gun with brown plastic grips be a configuration that would have been found on a 1911A1 during WWII?

    Tom,
Generally speaking yes, but that may also describe an arsenal rebuilt gun or one refinished by a civilian collector or shooter. There were other WWII pistols with Dulite or parko-lubrite finishes. Nearly all had brown plastic grips and there were many variations of grips. The value of each gun can vary greatly. If you post a serial number and perhaps even photos you will have the correct answer.
