Have a question for the Floridians on this forum

My good friend is moving to Florida and I got a Florida CWP with the thought of FFL'ing one of my guns down there, picking it up and going shooting with my friend and FFL'ing it back to New York when I return home.I was told that if I were to do this the Florida FFL would not release the gun to me even though I have a Florida Concealed Weapons License. Is this actually the truth?.I look foward to your knowlegeable input.Thanks...Mike

I am making the assumption you are talking about a handgun! You have to be a Florida resident for the FFL to release the gun to you. The Florida Concealed Permit is not a proof of residence! You are aware you can check your weapon in airline luggage if you follow TSA rules and airline procedure.

Thanks Ken.Living here in NY checking a firearm can easily get you arrested especially if you are leaving out of Laguardia or JFK airports.I have a NY State Pistol Licence which is NOT RECOGNIZED IN THE KINGDOM OF NY CITY.Even using a departure point not in NYC TSA would do everything in thier power to jam you so I wouldn't think of going that route although it is legal.Probably the best option for me would be to bring my left handed gun leather and carry one of my friend's revolvers while I am there. Here is another thought, could my friend who is a Florida resident pick up the gun for me??

I think you are asking if you can pay for the gun and he take possesion of the handgun. Who's name will it be registered in?
Your name......no he can not. His name registered your money, not kosher, unless you loan him money and he lets you use HIS new gun.

Just fly from somewhere in NY state where the laws are reasonable. Handguns declared and checked into baggage do not typically cause problems like NYC creates.

Have your FFL ship the gun to an FFL in FL as if it's going to your buddy. Have him pick it up and you use it. Then he has the FL FFL ship back to your FFL as if it's being transfered to you. But really it would be just easier to use one of your buddies while your down there.

No I wasn't talking about a straw purchase.I was refering to a plan like broknaxi posted.I know now it will be problematic shipping my gun there so I will just bring my lefty gun leather and shoot one of his guns.Unfortunately with NY being such a anti gun state it is JMHO that TSA and the police powers to be would create problems where none exist and I wouldn't want to be in a pair of silver bracelets by police looking to make a "GUN BUST".Thanks.....Mike

After reading the posts in other threads about people in NYC getting arrested and having a friend end up with a felony for taking a handgun to NYC, I wouldn't do it. And I'll probably never visit NYC. It's gotten to the point I don't go into the City of Chicago unless absolutly necessary.

A very enlightening discussion, indeed. I've often wondered what would happen to law-abiding New Yorkers if they attempted to declare and check an unloaded firearm at JFK or LaGuardia. In theory, TSA provides for this, but if one dares to do this, would the TSA folks and/or the NYPD be there to "cuff & stuff" you? I wonder: how does a NY resident legally get to the airport with the firearm in the first place, even if it's properly packaged? Does this mean that only NYC permit holders can legally check a firearm at these two airports?

Last summer I drove to Idaho & returned by commercial air. I have an Ohio CCW permit and had my Colt with me on the trip. When I approached the Boise Airport ticket counter I declared that I only had an unloaded firearm to check. The young lady seemed not the least bit concerned, handed me the requisite label & informed me that I needed to go to the TSA counter for their inspection. I'm not sure what I was expecting throughout this whole process, but no other passengers standing in line seemed concerned either. There were no shrill cries of "He's got a gun!!!'' or signs of panic anywhere. The TSA folks there were very kind and also unconcerned. They looked inside, signed off on the label, put it in my Brinks box and I locked it up myself. Into the baggage with it and off we went to Columbus.

I feel so bad for New Yorkers and can't imagine how this simple and completely legal scenario would play out in NYC. Someone please enlighten me?

I have a NY State Listol license that is NOT VALID IN THE CITY OF NY.The way the law is designed "Class A" city defined as a population of better than 1 million, the city goverment can make THIER OWN RULES.IN NY State it is the Judge that signs your license,in NY City that right was taken away from the Judges and lies with the Police. They have ruled that only a NY City pistol license will be recognized as valid in NY City yet that same license is recognized in the rest of NY State.I will have to fly out of Westchester County or other upstate NY Airport to check my firearm in for transport to Florida as I am licensed in NY State and Florida it is legal to do so.If I were to try the same thing in Laguardia or Kennedy Airport I would be promptly arrested. What I think would be poetic justice is if the rest of NY State returned the favor and arrested NY City residents for carrying outside "THE KINGDOM".Last I knew NY City was part of NY State.IMHO if they want to stand alone let them.Hope this answered your question
