The Largest Caliber Centerfire Rifle Ever Build

At least these guys claim it is the largest caliber certerfire rifle ever built.

I do not want to shoot it; that would be like getting kicked by a mule.

I saw a cased breech loading center fire black powder cartridge hammer double Holland & Holland rifle in .975 caliber. Cased with a spare set of barrels- for $15,000 back in the 70's!

Holy mackerel! Of course you could save the expense of that and just try to milk a bull. Kick should be comparable!!

In 1948, working as Pan Am airplane mechanic in Vienna, Austria, collecting some nice guns. I was offered a double-hammer rifle with loading tools and brass cartridge cases, etc. in a well used case dated 1870-80s, engraved some German expedition to Africa. Bore was an inch I guestimated, price was exorbitant $150. I passed. I could buy 3 or 4 cased dueller pairs for that.

Like a lot of others, my biggest gun-blunders were those I didn't buy.

Couldn't help but look at this again. I worked, in Texas,, years ago, as a range safety officer for a large shooting facility. One feature we had was to chronograph weapons for a small fee. Hunters getting ready for African safari's, and hunters going after big game, often would want their big bore rifles chrono'ed. One 'learns' how to handle the big shooters, .460 Weatherby's etc. The trick is just to know that there's no trick in shooting them. You're about to take a pounding, pull the butt tight against your shoulder and wait for it!

There's an early scene in the film Lawrence of Arabia where he is amusing fellow soldiers by putting out matches with his fingers. A fellow soldier tries and burns himself. "Ouch! It hurts! What's the trick, sir?"

"The trick" Lawrence quietly says, "is not minding that it hurts".
