Marlin is Now ownewd by Remington/Cerbeus. The guns , when they do produce one, is in Illion New York. There are many problems with the new lever actions. In Fact Marlins are the Number one Rifle returned to the Factory for warranty repairs by Cabela's. (That was from an inside Manager of the Gun Library at Cabela's Boise)

If the Serial Number starts with a "MR" (Must Repair), and or the the Barrel Proof mark is "REM", (Return Every Marlin). Then it is a Remington made gun.

DO NOT BY THESE in the BLIND !!!!

www.marlinowners.com has excellent references to these firearms..Buy a Used "JM" Marlin.

Follow the Aforementioned advice regarding Serial Numbers and Proof Marks. Be suspicious of anything starting with S/N 91 or 92.

Some corporations management must have the anal cranial inversion. The Marlin 39 is the rifle with the most years in continuous production. I think the bugs were worked out long ago. I have a 39A from I bought new in 1968, and it works fine.

From what I read, when Remington bought Marlin, they did not offer any of the skilled assemblers / gunsmiths relocation funding. In addition to having to move to a higher cost of living area, all the wages were cut. No experience help moved. They were / are stuck with stock boys and office clerks. Many never even handled firearms before .

The JM proof on the barrel means only that that particular barrel was made at the old plant.
Ilion-made Marlin leverguns have been built with JM barrels in using up the last of them.
