For what you plan on doing with it I would get the revolver. With the .357 you have two calibers in one gun. The .357 for hunting and you can shoot the cheaper .38 at the range.
Good day!!
Been lurking around for a bit reading and learning. I believe if you really want to learn about something find a forum and join it. Read up and ask questions from forum members.
Well i finally have a question worth asking. But first a bit of background. I am from NY and To be more exact NYC. Now there are many pluses to living in a big city, but gun ownership is not one of them. I am not going to bore you with my problems except to ask for your advice. I will have funds to buy only one gun and it will be my first gun. I will carry it with me during big game hunting as a back up. i will shoot it at the range when i go shoot my long guns and I will start reloading soon and will reload for the pistol as well. I been torn between two guns and it will be some time before i can buy another one( i plan to own both of the guns it just a matter of which one first).
As a first gun what would you guys choose a Colt Python 6 inch .357 or Colt 1911 (something like Gold Cup or Special Combat Government) Both can be obtained for around 1400- 1500. I was told revolvers are better to learn on and i was also told i am better off with 1911 than a discontinued revolver.
I am sure there are people on this board that own both and can chime in. I thank you guys in advance.

Abe Lincoln may have freed all men, but Sam Colt made them equal.

I would also suggest the revolver but not the Python. The objective is to carry a backup not a first line collectable.I would suggest the Trooper 357 or the Trooper MKIII as either are just as capable as the Python for half the price. That's my two cents and that's about a cent and a half more than what it's worth.D*

If you keep doing what you always did you will always get what you always got
You cant go wrong with the .357, a python is a great gun and will only go up in value. if you carry it and take good care of it you would at least always get your money back..I like the idea of the trooper as well..all of mine have been good shooters..but if your only buying one gun- id buy the python..
If it were my choice I'd just pick one and buy it. Chances are good, especially with most of us here, that before too long you'll wind up getting the other one too. Let us know what you finally decide on.![]()

I too think a revolver is a good choice. I think you will tire carrying a 6" Python all day hunting. I think a 4" is much more suitable for long day hikes. You will also find that if you pay $1,500.00 for a 6" Python, you will be reluctant to take it into the woods. I would reevaluate my needs and my intended uses from a practical stand point.

If your purpose is to carry the gun as a backup for hunting, then I'd choose the python - you get reliability and power, no need for capacity or concealability. If you were to go the 1911 rout however, I'd be looking at the Colt Delta Elite in 10mm. .45 ACP is not a prefered round for a hunting backup.
As far as Python vs. other .357 - there's nothing wrong with using a Python for hunting - I'd probably look for at least a 6" in stainless. People hunt with $15,000 Blaser rifles - why would you worry about a $1,500 Python?

I have a 6in Python that I used for hunting and carried it at times when chasing deer & antelope around out west. It always served me well. But that was the only handgun I had at the time and I only paid $100.00 for it!! I would opt for a 4in version in your choice of Python, one of the Trooper models, or the plain ole .357 - But as stated above - eventually you'll get another one.
