    Detective Special Dual Tone ***SOLD***

I picked up a Detective Special MFG 1951 with a dual Tone finish. Was this a special order from COLT or was it a production model???

At first blush it says refinish to me. Are the straps matte as well as the cylinder flutes?

I have a dual tone era OP that had the flutes and the inside of the trigger guard were left alone, but the rest of the gun was polished.

Yours is the correct year to have been originally dual tone. Better pictures of the side plate and barrel markings would help.

The gun is correct, Colt did offer the dual tone finish in nickel during the post-war period from 1947-54 or so. As usual, the nickel seems to be encountered less often than the blue. The nickel dual tone was done the same way as the blue with the matte top and bottom of the frame as well as the cylinder flutes.

I came real close to bidding on that gun and corresponded with the seller. The lack of original grips (the gun would have come with the plastic Coltwood grips- originals have been bringing over $100 when they can be found) and the fact that the cyinder face looked really dirty kept me away. There's no way of knowing if a nickel gun will clean up until you try. Still, if it cleans up good, I think you got a pretty fair deal for under $450. Congrats!

Here's a link to the auction which shows some better pics of the dual tone finish: Colt Detective Special .38 Stag/Ivory Grip Vintage : Revolvers at GunBroker.com

Pictures in the link help a lot. Looks legit to me now. Should clean up real nice.

I wasn't even sure it was nickel in the first thumbnail.

    Nice snag snubbies.

Thats is very nice !! Nice catch. I kinda like the Stag look. But I'm sure a set of proper stocks could be found.
