Boy, thats a beaut Twaits. I love the 1950s and earlier N frame S&Ws.
I learned on the S&W forum this would be refered to as a "Pre Model marked 29"
It's after they came out with the designation M29 but before they actually stamped it anywhere on the gun.
It was another great deal. I'm afraid to post what he paid for it on the S&W forum because a lot of people will come out of the woodwork saying that he should have offered more and that he ripped off his friend etc etc. He's known this friend for probably 50 years or more and the guy said he didn't want to make a killing on it and my Dad is not looking to re sell it. He just wanted to keep it "in the family" so to speak. I've heard stories about this gun growing up as a kid.
Anyway, the first dealer he took it too offered him $250!
My Dad gave him $500. Here's the pictures he e-mailed me today. Is this fricken nice or what!!

Yep, that's the dandy one to have. Nice deal between friends. Salute!
If it does not have its box and tools, that does reduce the value substantially.
No box unfortunately
Please Measure the Barrel. Is that a 6" or 6 1/2" ?

2. The American G. I.

That's 6 1/2" for sure. But I've been wrong more than right. Erik, I'd post that over at S&W telling the story you said here. I have an antagnistic streak a little when it comes to hypocrisy. Internet moralists will say something like, " well, if your dad sells it will he split the money with his freind?" or some such BS. I know he won't sell it but when these same high horse moralists go to a gunshow and see an old man walking around with a factory engraved Merwin & Hulbert in 90% condition and find out the asking price is $400 you know their "morals" are nowhere to be found. People who are religious only on Sunday or spout moral platitudes when it applies to other people deserve to get slapped down hard. I hear too much of that on these forums and it ------ me off. So, I'd post it over there and see how many hypocrits you stir up.
I'm riding with Wyatt on this one. Once upon a time I owned quite a few pistols of brand x. I've rebuilt many of brand x for guns shops. I've replaced some weak main springs in some SAA's but never had to work on a Colt. I know how brand x works mechanically, but perhaps not what time on May 12th they changed from forged to vendor supplied screws. There are quite a few good folks there but there are a few fellows there who must have coached god before he built the earth. Shortly after I was told NO! NO! NO! on a repair issue by a less than knowledgable fellow I shut up and shortly there after sold all except my 629-4, 22 Masterpiece and a Nickle 4" 19 my wife likes. They were sold to buy and replace the Colts of my youth. And I have zero regrets. I'm ready Wyatt, lets saddle up. We'll see them before they see us, a few of those gents are riding egos bigger than a bull elephant with 100 pound Ivory.
Thanks for joining my posse, 1966Python. Someone once wrote on this subject about how they spent years learning by trial and error the fine art of buying guns, losing money in the process like we all have, but now has to school everyone they encounter about how their asking price is a little low? Give me a break! Of course we don't. Yet I've been offered guns from guys at work who I didn't know too well yet knew I was that "gun guy" and I gave them top dollar assesments of what i think their guns were worth. BTW, 1966. The thing that got me riled up is not exclusive to any particular forum. I've seen it many places. So, when you mosey back into town I'll meet ya' at the Longbranch and buy you a beer. Just don't tell that freeloader Festus.
I post a lot over there too. I must have low morals though as I might have tried to talk the friend down. Now if I thought it would make the seller mad, I would pay full pop.
