United Nations Arms Trade Treaty (ATT)

I hope this is not against the posting rules. I thought it would be worth sharing with the forum members. This morning I called Senator Sherrod Brown(Dem) of Ohio and talked with one of his staff members. He took my name and email address address and man was I shocked to hear from him already today. I must admit that I like what he wrote, but I also understand that he IS a Politician. Here is what he wrote me. I am interested in your views.

    Dear Mr. Josephites:

Thank you for getting in touch with me about the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty (ATT).

Since 2006, members of the United Nations have been negotiating a treaty to combat the illicit international trade of arms. The treaty would establish global standards for the import, export, and transfer of conventional weapons — ranging from tanks, fighter jets, small arms, and ammunition — to prevent them from fueling conflicts or falling into the hands of terrorists, warlords, and international crime syndicates.

I have heard from many Ohioans who are concerned that an ATT could infringe upon their Second Amendment rights. The ATT is not intended to devise a global gun ban or deny law-abiding U.S. citizens their right to bear arms. The United States has made it clear throughout negotiations that any potential ATT must respect the sovereign rights of nations to regulate gun sales and ownership within their own borders. The Supreme Court has also ruled that no treaty may supersede the powers set forth by our Constitution or Bill of Rights.

I fully support the Second Amendment right to bear arms and will continue to protect this fundamental right. Should the ATT come before the Senate for ratification, I will be sure to keep your views in mind, and I will not support any treaty that undermines the Second Amendment.

Thank you again for contacting me.

    Sincerely,

    Sherrod Brown
    United States Senator

Standard politician BS. Either he doesn't really understand the step-by-step agenda, doesn't think you do or just doesn't care except to get re-elected. More of the same IMO.

Go to the NRA website. It explains exactly what the effects of the UN treaty will be, and they are not pretty. I believe nothing any politician says.

If it is signed by the Sec.of State and the President and not brought befor the Senate for ratification it is in effect until that happens. The current Senate majority leader has no intention of bringing it up for a vote because he doesn't have the necessary 67 votes for ratification.D*

he understands it, he has a long history of seeking gun control. he's just hoping that his carefully worded response placates the public.

Gee, Oldedawg, I'm not sure what words you used when calling his office, but that was indeed an incredibly quick response. Whenever I've contacted Senator Brown I either get the standard, non-sensical, boiler-plate, liberal gibberish or no response at all. I follow him closely and his record speaks for itself. Besides, he's up for reelection in November so he, like the President, will promise you no harm to our 2A rights. That's my opinion and I'm not too humble about it.

Every politician I have ever heard comment claims to support the Second Amendment. The devil is, absolutely, in the details. To some polititcians, the 2A means the states can have a Nationl Guard, that owning a rifle or shotgun for sporting purposes ( hunting, organized target shooting only ) is, or may possibly be, legal, that you may own a firearm as long as it is secured in a Govt., or Govt. approved armory, between range or hunting trips, after the required background check, psych. evaluation, police or judicial approval and interviews of neighbors, employers, relatives and clergymen of course. I have heard variations on all these themes, but the politician always, always professes to be in support of the Second Amendment...
