I didn't know that canadian's could still own a handgun. How hard is it to start a collection?

It is not that complicated but it takes a time. Only two legal reasons to own HG in Canada are collecting, and target shooting. To be able to purchase the gun you have to be licensed and authorised, document is called PAL. (Possession and Acquisition Licence) In order to get it you have to take course and pass exam, then you submit application that is to be approved and PAL issued. Then you have to join the club and apply for an ATT. Which is authorisation to transport. Only then you can acquire a handgun from the shop or privately. But you do not get to get it home yet, shop initiate process of registration and only if you are approved again short term ATT will be issued to you so you can transport it at home. Do not even ask about rules for transportation and storage once you get it home.
Thanks for the run-down on how Canadians purchase their handguns. Welcome to the Forum (bit late).
