I just recently purchased a Colt 44 special, New Service revolver, manufactured in 1914. Upon close inspection, it appears that the "special" name on the barrel is different than the other markings, as though it had been modified. Any thoughts about this? In all other respects, the engraving appears to be normal.

If it is a correct barrel, it should be marked, "44 Russian and S&W Special".
Older New Service Barrels that are marked "New Service 44" are for 44-40 caliber guns.

Welcome to the forum . I speak for most when I say we'd love to see some photos . The New Service is popular here .
As you have this same question posted in the revolver forum we are going to close this one to save repetition and confusion .
