I have not. I can find no data listed in my IMR reloaders guide for the 45 ACP.

Re: IMR Trail Boss Powder for 45acp

I suspect it's a poor choice for the .45acp cartridge. It's a very low density bulky propellent more intended for cases with excessive volume such as the .38/.357, 44spcl/44mag when used at low target velocities with lead bullets. Works great in that application. I don't think the .45acp case has sufficent volume to use this propellents characteristics.

It is said that it doesn't like to be compressed and gets erratic under those conditions. Might, might be suitable in a very light load for .45acp revolvers.

I like trailboss and use a lot of it in my .38/.357 lead target loads. Clean, accurate and has helped reduce leading. Don't think .45acp is the proper application for it.

On a per weight basis, it is said Trailboss has similar performance to a like amount of Bullseye. When I load .45acp with 5 grains of 231, I use the #8 Lil'Dandy rotor. This nearly fills the case to capacity. The #8 rotor only throws 2.1 grains of Trailboss. I seriously doubt that would cycle most semi-autos and would be a real mouse-fart load in a revolver.

Re: IMR Trail Boss Powder for 45acp

The .45ACP round was designed around a military powder that we know nowadays as Bullseye. In other words, it is intended for use with a very fast-burning powder of fairly high intensity.
More modern equivalents such as Winchester Super Target and Vihta Vuori 310 make for reliable functioning in my guns.
I tried Trail Boss for .38 reduced-power loads but did not see any real improvement in consistency on the chrono or in group size. For .45 Colt and .44 Special, neither of which I am reloading at the moment, I would guess it would have good utility.
But .38 Specials go better for me (and smell better!) with Super Target and, especially, VV 320.
And for .45ACP, I simply gave up on everything else but WST.
Your choice of Bullseye is pretty much optimal, and economical, too. I just tend to the improved cleanliness and reduced noise (yes, it's true) of WST.

Re: IMR Trail Boss Powder for 45acp update w/pic

Here is a picture of 15 rounds fired off hand at 50feet, i loaded 3 - 5 round mags and shot all this in less then 60 seconds. Its 5.0 grns of the trail boss under 200 grn SWC 10-rounds are masterblaster bullets and 5- rounds are lazer cast in winchester cases. I do not have a chronograph, but they did feel more stout then 4.0 grns of Bullseye in the same setup. The pistol used is my Colt Gov built by Wilson Combat back when he used colt's.
    Thanks for all the responses,

I am currently using two of ATK's [Alliant]fine powders: PROMO, and ClayDot.
For 45acp I am using ClayDot. Works great. PM me if you want the exact receipe...

Thank you to everyone, i must admit i have great success with bullseye except that its dirty.
The trail boss, i think i can twink alittle more accuracey out of it and it already burns clean.
I love how it fills the case to the bullet too.
    Thanks,

I just recieved an update from a friend.
    Hodgdon is now recommending:
180 grain lead bullet Trail Boss 3.5 to 5.0 max
200 grain lead bullet Trail boss 3.5 to 5.5 max
230 grain bullet Trail Boss 3.5 to 4.5 max
You can find it at Hodgdons website.

Thanks i also found their reloading at their website and settled on about 5grns under a 200 grn swc which is the load i shot above.
I was hoping to find another using it in the same way, same bullet and for competition.
    Thanks Ball
