Ammunition help?
I am more of a collector and rarely fire any of the pistols or rifles. I have a 1917 U.S.Colt and S&W I would like to fire in the future. What is the best type of ammunition to use? (The same for both?)
You comments are appreciated,

As Wil said so succinctly, any .45 ACP (NOT +P) will suffice. They were sighted for 230 gr. ball ammo. Non-corrosive would probably be preferable and most likely what you'll find at the local gun shop.

Some issues you may run into
If you don't mind buying the harder to find 45 auto rim ammo, these work and function great out of these revolvers. If you want to fire 45 auto, then sometimes you may run into issues when shooting them without clips. Some 45 acp brass is shorter and this may lead to misfires. If you load the cartridges into clips, then this problem goes away. Putting the ammo onto the clips is easy, taking the fired or unfired cases off of the clips is a pain without one of the new tools to help, then its easy without bending the clips.

I agree with the .45 Auto Rim suggestion. I enjoy shooting Model 1917 Colt and Smith & Wesson revolvers but, being lazy, enjoy dispensing with fiddling with the clips.
