I got a RELOADER for Christmas!

This is great! just opened the present about an hour ago. A gift from mom and dad.

This will save me a lot of money. A single complete reloader kit with a Speer manuel.

I'm told you need to take your time getting into this. I'm starting by reading the manuel info and warnings. Lots of interesting info.

Some of the loading data is kinda surprising me. (I don't have it in front of me) but it looked like some of the data for .38 Spl.+P in maximum (safe?) pressure with Power Pistol powder was going to give you a velocity of 1004 ft per second out of a 2 inch barrel? Did I read that right?

Congratulations on your new adventure. You are going to enjoy reloading. Digest that manual. The Speer Manual is one I really like. There is a lot of good information in it. The new ones have loads for RCBS bullets from their moulds. It's a great manual.

RCBS is the brand of reloader I got. I can't wait to go get a work bench tomorrow, powder, primers and bullets.

This should be fun. I'm enjoying going through the manuel

LET US NOTE RIGHT HERE AND NOW : That 1004FPS velocity from THEIR gun will NOT be the number you might get from YOUR gun. You can bet the ranchita upon it !!!
DO NOT become enamored of the velocity numbers in the loading manuals as none of those numbers will apply to your guns or to my guns or to that fellow's guns over there. It might be close but it will NOT be the same !!!

Their test gun may also have a 4 inch or 6 inch barrel. As you acquire different published load data, you will notice some list +P loads for the same grains of the same powder and same weight jacketed bullet as other manuals list as medium regular 38 special loads. When you can, pick up the Hornady manual also.

yeah, but still, even giving or taking a few ft per second from that...that's still a pretty hot +P(+?) load.

The manual says it was from a 2 inch barrel (I'm just telling y'all what it says....and actually asking whether y'all believe it.)

    Next purchase-chronometer

These are under $100 now days and I don't know how I went so long without one. Also, after you get hooked on making your own ammo, bullet casting is next.

Check out Missouri Bullet Company for some good prices on cast bullets....IMO, about all you ever need for a .38.

That sounds screamin hot to me. I tested some +P's(factory loads) in my Det Spl, and Ithink they were close nto 900fps. Ill have to go check my old post in this forum

Check bmcgilvray's testing +P's in this forum. He did clock OVER 1000fps out of 2" barrel with the buffalo borefactory loads. See his thread here (Idont know just how to do the "link" thing
