I prefer whatever is the cheapest. Never had a problem outta any of them. I just got 10k Tula's priced at 20 bucks per 1k with free shipping...They work just fine.
To date I am waiting for my local shop to get some Winchester primers in as those are what have been used in the recipes I have found. However as I begin the process I have noticed that CCI leaves the least about of carbon burn in the pocket thus is the easiest to clean. Anyone have a preference for one brand over another and if so why?
thanx

CCI and Federal seem to be a bit softer than Winchester in my experience.
I use Federal primers now in my K38 based race gun, worked action, bobbed hammer, light rebound and hammer spring etc.
I used to have 'light hits' with Winchester primers that didnt go off. Didnt change anything except primers to Federal and havent had a problem since.
Doesnt make any difference in any other gun I have.

CCI: Because I got a crap ton of them at a cheap price and there is no way on this planet that I notice a difference in accuracy with my skill level of shooting from one primer to the next. Whatever ignites the powder cheapest is what I buy.
I mostly use CCI have used themfor so long I guess I never thought to try anything else they have always been reliable never had any problems with them.
I only use Winchesters. I like the looks of a brass primer in a brass case.

That is so cool! Thanks for that! I've been using CCIs exclusively and didn't know this. I think I'll have to try using brass Winchester primers for my black powder loads. The nickeled primers just don't look quite right in my cartridge belt, and they will provide another way to distinguish BP cartridges from the smokeless. Too bad no one makes rounded brass primers any more, or do they?
No matter how hard I try, I get some CCI primers that won't go off on the first strike in my revolvers. No problems in 1911's. My fault - I'm sure they are high primers. Winchesters are much better in this regard. I also get the feeling that the CCI primers are somewhat larger in diameter than Winchester. The Federal primers I've used seem to seat much easier in the pockets. I believe I'm going to switch over entirely to Federal in the future.
To sum up: CCI large primers work fine for me in autos, but I want Winchester or Federal in small pistol.
I hand load primarily for .45 acp handgun range fodder, but also load .223 for range fodder as well as accuracy. I have used CCI, Wichester, Federal, and even Wolf without problems. I should say that at my level of accuracy it makes no difference.
