    stupid indoor range rules

i used to have a membership at the local indoor range. at one time you could shoot any ammo you wanted, no problem.
they then changed the rules to prohibit magnum ammo because it supposedly would hurt the backstop metal. i thought that was kinda weak and didn't renew my membership because of it.
i just went back today and they wouldn't let me shoot hollowpoint non-magnum factory ammo. i was told because it tends to spark and ricochet.
i told the guy that i knew he didn't make the rules, but hollowpoint was less likely to ricochet than the hardball he was letting me shoot.
he also wouldn't let me shoot factory ammo w/nickle cases, calling them steel cased ammo.
i just gave up and figured it was a weak attempt to get everyone to buy their overpriced ammo.

Knowledge is a powerful tool to waste. Education the the medium to bring the tool in to play.
Failure to be able to tell the difference between the obvious and the vague is a lack of education.
Greed has always been the cornerstone of failure.

I think I would find another range or meet with the Owner in attempt to bring about the meeting of the minds in a courteous and respectful manner.

You still might end up in the same place, but it won't be for a lack of trying.

    Good Luck.

i appreciate the sentiment, makes sense.
think i will go to the outdoor ranges, there is surely no lack of them, and you can shoot whatever you wish, within reason.
i really believe that the owner wouldn't accept logic, as it would fly in the face of him selling his ammo.

Some of the indoor Ranges here will not let you shoot any Ammunition which contains or which they think m-i-g-h-t or will contain 'Lead'...and, they sell Lead-less Ammunition in order to allow you to Shoot, in case you forgot to bring your own Lead-less Ammunition.

I got as far as the front counter, and, never went back.

Been to my share of indoor ranges and have seen all manner of "odd" restrictions. I realize that indoor ranges serve a purpose for the multitude but I reckon once one frequents outdoor ranges they just have a way of embracing you. Less noise, less pollutants in the air, typically fewer people on an average day and nothing like reaching out past 25 yards to see how good (or bad) you really are

Yet another reason to avoid the lure of the bright urban lights.

Thats the primary reason I belong to a gun club with outdoor ranges. Indoor ranges can get all wrapped up in "Rule Wonkery"

A shot with a little snow on the ground.

From this past summer...one of the locals trespassing with his Lady friend.

I seldom shoot at an outdoor range other than IDPA, etc Matches. And indoor range use is even rarer...usually only when I visit my Niece in Portland and her husband and I visit an indoor range. That facility requires THEIR overpriced ammo only which is annoying. But the ONLY way we can shoot so I grin and bear it.

Have to say I DO really enjoy "Range Trolls" the guy who simply HAS to come over and offer his "wisdom" on whatever your shooting or to critique your targets.
    Awfully amusing and generally entertaining.

I'd pursue numismatics exclusively, giving up recreational shooting entirely if I had to put up with public ranges. I grew up shooting on our own land, still shoot there, and supplement it with a membership in a private gun club less than two miles from my house.
