    shellplate for .41 Long Colt

Trying to get set up on a Dillon XL650 press to reload for my .41 SAA. I have every thing but the shellplate. I was wondering if you guys that load the .41 could tell me what caliber shellplate or shell holder you use.

Good question, someone here should know. Maybe member Muddyboot, he might reload the .41

Here's Dillions Tech help page - you could probably email or call

Thanks for your input, broknaxl. I contacted Dillon prior to my post here but they were not much help. I know Starline brass recommends a RCBS #32 shell holder but in talking with them it has to be modified for the .41 case to fit. I 'm not set up to do that so hence my post here.

I have a redding T-7 turret press which uses the # 1 or # 12 shellholder for 41 LC. So I can't help you with the Dillion.
Loaded up a 100 round of 41 LC this morning. What do you plan to use as a load for your SAA.

Looking at "Cartridges of the World" it appears that a .38 S & W is pretty close:
    .38 S & W:
    Base diameter: .386
    Rim diameter: .433
    Rim thickness: .055

    .41 Colt:
    Base diameter: .405
    Rim diameter: .430
    Rim thickness: .052

The shell plate will need to be opened up for the base diameter. Does Dillon make a shell plate for the .38 S & W?

muddyboot, I plan on using three different powders. I have a load of 4.5gr of Trail Boss, 4.6gr of Unique and 3.2gr of tite group. The titgroup is a mid range load for the .38 spl so should work fairly well.

Ken, the .38 S&W shell holder will work with some opening up. I had one for my Lee single stage that I opened up with a borrowed die grinder and then used it to load up 50 rounds with different loads to see what works best with my old .41. The shell holder for .45acp works for everything except priming which tends to push the case up out of the holder. All the loads I am trying are with a 200gr hollow base bullet. I found them at a reasonable price at Western Bullet Company.

Thanks for the replies from both of you.

    Joe

I'm using 5 grains of Unique with 200 grain Buffalo Arms Co cast bullets. The
Western Bullet Company bullets seem to be to small in diameter for my Starline
    brass.

When I first got the .41 I bought two boxes of Ten-X ammo. This is the brass I am reloading. I have too put a slight bell on the case to get the Western Bullet Co. bullets to go in without shaving lead. This is Starline brass they used. Maybe I got lucky with the bullets? Any way they seem to work for me.
