    Colt M4 Expanse question

    Hi everyone,
I am looking to get my first AR and I saw that Colt has a new M4 for 2016. The MSRP for this is within my budget (on a fixed income) and I was wondering if anyone of you folks know anything about it. What is the difference between the M4 Expanse and the LE 6902? All I can see is a rear sight and 250.00. Any help would be appreciated. I am partial to Colts. I already own a second generation SAA and a 1911. Please advise. Thanks.

Pics of the new 2016 Colt model CE1000 M4 Expanse with MSRP of $699 from Colt's official 2016 price list.

This new Colt M4 model was just announced yesterday 7/06/2016 and had no detail info with it yet.

Just by looking at some pictures available from the web, I noticed there is no M4 M203 grenade launcher mounting notch in front of the front sight, no bayonet lug, no sling swivel mount under the front sight, and as you said no rear sight, everything else seems normal same as a standard model LE6920 M4 carbine.

I'm not sure if it got chrome lined barrel and even if the barrel material is mil-spec chrome moly Vandium steel alloy, they said it would work with both 5.56 and commercial .223 so their chamber must be 5.56 mm NATO.

I don't see any California version of this new model.

Other than that who ever is going to the SHOT Show this month would probably get more detailed info.

Colt also expanded it's upper half like the 6720 lightweight barrel, 6920 M4, 6951 9mm, 6921 14.5", all with no handguard versions except the 9mm upper half.

If you're on a fixed income, I'd recommend buying a good used older variation, rather than this - one with a bayonet lug, sling swivel, 'and' an upper, or with an attached upper.

Do it 'now', since all this talk about new forms of gun control is going to drive up new gun sales again, and used prices even moreso, as fear ripples through the marketplace.

Found another info about this new model carbine, right here at the Colt Forum's The Lounge Forums (thread link of "2016 New Models" below), posted on 1/01/2016 by Admin GS.

Bullet number two of the noted 2016 New Models thread stated that:

    Expanse M4 Carbine

    CE1000 M4 Carb 5.56x45mm-blk-30rd

    • Upgradable with the addition of a Forward Assist and
    Dust Cover

    https://www.coltforum.com/forums/loun...ew-models.html

It won't have these two features from the factory but could be upgraded later on.

Thank you again sir. My main reason for interest in this model is that I can upgrade a little at a time as my budget allows. Do you know when it will be available for purchase?

I found another info about the barrel from another dealer, the barrel will not have chrome lining, and I'm still trying to find out if they're using mil-spec 11595E alloy steel, also the profile under the handguards either lightweight Government type, medium or heavy profile.

I'm also kind of interested in this new Expanse model and also with the stripped down LE6920 OEM2 without furniture (no front sight), I kind of prefer barrels with chrome lining so I would either replace this barrel with a chrome lined Colt barrel or go with the OEM2 model instead to avoid a major rework.

I haven't seen any announcement of availability probably they'll announce it during the SHOT Show in Vegas on Jan. 19 to 22.

The factory makes their models in batches throughout the year so it is hard to guess when they're going to schedule this new model.

Colt is probably producing the AR15A4 rifle right now to be released in Feb. to Mar. so maybe sometimes after that.

I just found out that the barrel material is 4150 CMV (Chrome Moly Vanadium) mil-spec type from this article posted on 1/1/2016, link below.

Also see the video of all the new Colt 2016 models at the media day at Gunsite, AZ on Nov 2015, vid posted on Jan. 1, 2016.

Colt Mfg 2016 previews new firearms at Gunsite. - Range Hot

A picture from the article from rangehot.com showing the right side without dust cover installed, no forward assist plunger but just covered with caps with Colt stylized logo.

This pic shows front sling swivel mounts under the front sight base, the skinny shorty carbine single layer heat shields handguards, and the current P&S made M4 waffle type 2 buttstock.

These are a good starter basic AR model but could be upgraded later by the owners, some will like it as a parts donor for their AR build projects, probably could be used as a truck gun, plinker or shooting range toy, etc.

The slight down side is the no chrome bore lining which would take a little longer to clean, the bore is more prone to possible corrosion, maybe either wear it out then replace it with a chrome lined barrel or replace it with a better barrel at the start.

This Expanse model will replace the discontinued old basic starter 6900 Lightweight carbine a few years ago with fixed trigger guard, no dust cover, no forward assist (cannot be upgraded), and not even made at the CT factory.

Colt just now updated their site which shows this new Expanse M4 carbine and the weight is stated at 6.44 pounds.

That low weight of this new carbine should mean that it might have a lightweight contour barrel under the handguards, the basic standard LE6920 M4 carbine for comparison weights 6.9 pounds.

The M16A1 had the chrome-lined barrel since 1967 - it's one of the modifications that turned it into that model, and it's proved pretty workable.

Any idea 'why' - after all this time and several million chrome-lined barrels built by Colt and various contractors later - they'd even think that a return to a non-chromed barrel was a good idea, other than to cheapen the overall cost?

Why buy a 'starter' rifle to add to later on?

Better to buy a complete rifle/carbine that needs nothing right now, and later on, buy all the bells and whistles that all the fobbits do for the 'cool factor' - that's what 'layaway' is for.
