    Colt M4 Barrel stamped MP

I'm just curious I recently purchased a used Colt LE M4 and the Barrel is stamped 13629 MP. Someone told me that it was not a colt barrel but a M&P barrel. Can anyone tell me if its the original barrel? Thanks

MP means the barrel has been Magnetic Particle inspected...part of the MilSpec process. All Colt AR/M4 barrels are done as far as I know. It's one thing that makes Colt rifles stand out from the rest...true MilSpec...many, if not most of the other brands are not. It doesn't necessarily mean other brands are not good quality...it just means the makers have not gone to th expensive process of verifying it. With the other brands that don't test for MilSpec you don't know whether you're getting a quality barrel or not, a product "seconds" or a piece of junk. You're depending on the maker's reputation and promises of quality.

The number 13629 is the CAGE code for Colt Defense, currently the factory are using this CAGE code on barrels, charging handles, upper receivers, etc.

Before these CAGE codes were used they used the letter "C" on Colt factory manufactured components.

You have the Colt made original barrel of recent manufacture production.

Magnetic particle inspection is used to find cracks in the surface of ferrous parts. If the part passes it gets stamped with the "MP". A Colt bolt should also have it.

Magnetic Particle inspection is sometimes know by its tradename, Magnaflux. The process involves inducing a magnetic field in the item being inspected, covering it with fluorescent magnetic particles, and examining the part under UV light to locate discontinuities not open to the surface. Very commonly used in the aerospace industry.to inspect parts used in critical applications.

Magnetic particular inspection is actually a fairly fast and simple process.A company I worked for did MP inspection on barrel blanks from a new lot of steel before they were drilled and reamed to insure the lot of steel was suitable to use.

And whoever told you it meant that it was an "M&P" barrel... quit listening to them. They don't know what they're talking about.

And for a lot more mundane applications, too. We had a Magnaflux setup back when I worked at a John Deere dealership; we used it to look for cracks in engine blocks and heads.
