    My Dragoon 3rd Model.

This is my 1859 Dragoon 3rd model. I purchased it from a deceased estate a few years ago but unfortunately the family of the former owner had no idea, or interest, in its provenance. My Colt letter tells me that this Dragoon, with shoulder stock as an accessory, was shipped along with a total of 60 Dragoons to J.P.Moores & Sons of NY, NY on 21 April 1861(2 weeks after the start of the US Civil War). I'd like to think it saw service with a NY cavalry unit but who knows. Same mystery as to how it ended up Down Under. But I am very pleased with it as it is very good condition. The original 3rd model rear sight has been removed and replaced by a dove tail sight. My only concern is the matching serial number on the cylinder; it looks just a little too crisp to me. Would welcome any comments.

I believe your 3rd Model Dragoon has been buffed. Note the weak cylinder stops, and approaches, also the dished appearance behind screw heads on the frame, the extremely weak "Colt's Patent", and the weak barrel serial number. My guess is that the barrel address, likewise, would be equally weak. So, yes, the cylinder serial number does appear to be restamped, as it is too prominent relative to the rest of the cylinder, with cylinder scene completely obliterated through buffing.

Here is a Colt Dragoon that has a weak cylinder scene and the serial number is that which I would expect of yours given the state of wear and no later restamping having been done:

The serial numbers of the cylinder are restamped, all the ciphers are different to the ciphers on the gun. I think the case is modern.

Thanks for the replies. I am certain the cylinder serial # has been re-stamped but not sure why. The case is a modern repro by the famous Bill of Bill's cases. Despite its obvious faults, it is still my favourite.

Trigger looks like a replacement, no matter what, that's a nice Dragoon. How is the condition mechanically?

Hadn't really had a good look at the trigger but in comparison to some photos of other 3rd models, I think you are right. Mechanically it is excellent as I had it serviced and some minor mechanical repairs carried out a little while back. The action is very good and it cycles correctly.
