Welcome to the forum. The King Cobra was a standard production gun. However, Colt no longer makes any double action revolvers. There is no published Colt serial number data since 1985, so you can call Colt (1-800-962-COLT) and ask for date of manufacture or likely someone on the forum can give you a ballpark. Barrel lengths and finishes are valued differently with the 2" blue apparently being the least common. I'm sure you will get some idea of value range from others, but a good way is to watch the on line gun auctions like GunBroker.com and AuctionArms.com.

Since you're starting without much information, here are scans of facing pages from the 1990 Colt catalog showing the "family".

Wow very cool thanks A1A,So its safe to assume this gun is 1990 or later. The gun in the catolog pick looks identical.I think mine is matte finish. Thanks alot I will call colt and see what they say.

I called Colt they say the man date was 1988.As far as value It would be nice to know but not important. The guy I bought it from has past away and his son really wants the gun.I will probably wait until I see the son is financially secure and responsible and give the gun to him.Im afraid if I give it to him now he will sell or pawn it in a pinch.I figure its safer with me until the boy levels out a bit. Thanks again A1.

The KC was actually made on and off again in various finishes circa 1986-98. The 1990 catalog was just a convenient spread that included several pictures and a chart with the then new 2 1/2". Enjoy.

Good plan and you can use it in the meantime without hurting it a bit.
