Jim. Thanks for the info and I can only assume that the TARGET marking started around 1930 or at about S/N 38000. I will start taking note as to those that I encounter and check for the marking along with the serial numbers. I have several other Colt revolvers that I have been tracking to see when a particular change occurred so one more is not a problem.

For those reading this please check the barrels on your second model Police Positive Targets to see if the barrel has the word TARGET on the barrel and let us know what you find along with your serial number.

I realize you’re asking about the .22 caliber version, but figured I would ad this. Our Police Positive Target ca. 1924 chambered in .32 New Police does not have TARGET on the barrel roll mark. Sorry that I don’t have a better picture.

I think you are pretty close on the date. Thanks for your post on barrel checks. It will be interesting to see how early they start. Next will be the ejector heads. Jim

Tom, Thanks for your reply. Would like to see the .32 PPT's as well to see if the "TARGET" stamp shows up at the same time as the .22's

Cam - I can help you narrow it down a little closer. My PP Target .22 has the word "Target" on the barel. The s/n is 37278 and the Colt Letter confirms the manufacture date as October 16, 1929. It was a shipment of one gun to an "R. C. Asper" through VL&A in Chicago. I'll have to do some research on him.

Thanks for the last 2 post. Those numbers really narrow it down. Jim

The British proofs make sense seeing the fixed front sight. The Brits did not allow adjustable front sights on target guns, so Colt had to provide them with fixed front sights. Using an Official Police barrel was a quick and dirty way to accomplish this! Nice gun!
