The military specified that the Model 1917 Revolvers be serial numbered beginning with number 1 and run consecutively. Colt elected to continue to serial number the revolvers in their New Service serial number range, in addition to the required military serial number.

If I am understanding you correctly on the letter under the Colt serial, it represents the Colt workman that originally assembled the revolver. Colt issued letters and numbers to the workmen and inspectors as a way of identifying them.

On November 27, 1917 the largest single shipment of Model 1917 Colt revolvers was shipped to Springfield Armory. The shipment was 11,000, serial numbered from 51 to 11050.

Your Colt Model 1917 Revolver serial number 2163 was in this shipment. A Colt letter will tell you when it was assembled.

Hello. I stumbled onto this thread and forum from a link on Gunboards forum where I was trying to learn about my Colt M1917 I just purchased. (Didn’t even think to come to this forum - stupid of me!). But glad I found the forum and will be researching here.

In the mean time I’m hoping there might be some info available about my Colt. Crane number is 226985 and Army serial number is 73697.

I greatly appreciate any info info you might be able to provide. Thank you

Your Model 1917 Revolver Serial No. 73697 is in a group with no date or destination. There were 450 in the shipment.

I don't know if Colt has the information or not, but you might try contacting them.

Thanks so much Johnny! I greatly appreciate it.

So..A mystery eh? That's interesting - any guesses as to why that might be? I'll have to wait until after the holidays to contact Colt - I think they charge $100 or so for the history of a firearm don't they?

I am in the process of buying one of these model 1917's, but it has not arrived yet for inspection. I am under the impression that the 'official' Colt s/n is the one on the underside of the barrel, and the one on the butt of the grip is what the army assigned. I am aware of the additional number on the frame when you swing the cylinder open -- but what is the Crane number you refer to? When I am able to inspect it later this week I will write down all the numbers with corresponding locations.

    Thanks.
