USIBP Border Patrol New Service 1940 - US & CANADIAN BORDER!

This gun was sold on a local auction and I went after it because of the St Paul Minnesota history it may have connected to it. I collect Minnesota law enforcement pieces and this felt up my alley. I'm researching the claim that it was used by a St Paul cop. While I cannot/won't be able to substantiate that enitrely, I can substantiate what was found via the Colt archival search:

Serial Number XXXXXX - .38/c, 4”, Blue, Stocks not listed, Factory Engraved — U.S.I B.P. on the strap, the number “0XXX” is also assigned to this revolver, Sold to Chief Patrol Inspector in Houlton, Maine, Shipped to Joseph A. Lorch, 1010 Vermont Avenue, NW, Washington, D.C. on November 4, 1940, 54 guns in shipment, processed on Colt Factory Order # XXXX.

When I bought this and did some initial research, I had assumed since it was a 1940 made gun off of the SN, I figured it would be one of the Charles Askins guns, and hadn't thought to consider the other border sectors. The condition seems to be 100% original on it, which made me wonder why it would be so nice if it was issued to the rough and tumble southern border sector. It has holster wear, though for the most part it looks to be kindly used.

The history around Houlton is interesting, with the following said on the Customs website in regards to this sector: Houlton Sector Patrol Inspectors enforced Immigration laws throughout the State of Maine, as well as apprehended illegal liquor smugglers during the Prohibition era. Inspectors also routinely checked logging camps in the northwest part of the state to guard against illegal loggers from Canada. During World War II, agents assisted in the capture of escaped prisoners from the detention camp established in Houlton, Maine.

A fun research project on my hands!

Congradulations on a great purchase. I saw this auction and even called the auctioneer about a month ago to see if there was any documentation on the St Paul police claim and talk to him about the revolver, I even asked about additional markings. He didn't mention any. Good thing he had his head up his or you would have had to pay more.

I spoke with the owner 3 days before the auction to ask him specifically what markings it had and he was kind enough to give them to me over the phone. They did mention this at the time of the in person sale, and I thought for sure it would go north of what I paid.

What a great revolver. Just the original color on the lanyard loop makes me drool a little. I don't know what you paid but it sounds like you're pleased. Congrats on a beauty.

That's a great New Service. Thanks for sharing it.

The southern border gets all the attention. Makes me interested in old Border stores from up north.

It is a great revolver and I congratulate you on a wonderful find. I just wish you hadn't X'd out all the numbers for those of us who like to research and write about such things.
