    Official Police - Marked N. Y. S. T. (New York State Trooper) 1956

Although I am primarily a S&W collector, I do occasionally come across an interesting Colt.
Thought you folks would appreciate this NYST Official Police......pretty sure it started life with a 6" barrel and was cut down by the department to 4" at some point. Yes, the stocks number to the gun.
    Enjoy,

You may want to letter this OP. It seems odd that "S.T." in N.Y.S.T. would stand for state trooper.

Although I do not have a letter on this one I have done a fair amount of research online and the N. Y. S. T. (New York State Trooper) is certainly legit.

More guns were marked N. Y. S. P. (New York State Patrol) than N. Y. S. T. but both sets of initials were used.

Some years back I remember seeing a Colt in a LGS, not sure whether it was a Trooper or O. P., but it was refinished and had iirc; N.Y.S.T. or N.Y.S.P. stamped on the side of the frame.

N.Y.S.T. = marking used during the NYSP‘s Colt era, first on the New Service, then the Official Police in 6”, later 4”.

N.Y.S.P. = marking used after NYSP switched to S&W in the 1970s, mostly found on Models 681 and 28.

The fitting of the front sight does make it appear that it was not done originally by Colt factory.

I’ve come across a 1950s S&W M&P like that too. I think NYSP allowed officers who joined from neighboring agencies to bring their service revolvers with them. The M&P was lettered and had originally shipped to the NYPD equipment bureau.
