When I got my S&W 686 in 8 3/8" barrel when first introduced, there were no holsters made to accommodate the underlugged barrel in that length. So I used a holster designed for a Model 29 in 8 3/8" and wet molded it to fit. I wrapped the 686 in double plastic bags and forced fit it underwater into a lined Hunter holster. It worked and retained it's shaped, no damage to the gun or holster and still fits after 35+ years. I believe the Colt 1917 frame and S&W N frame are close enough in size to work.
Btw, this was on a used holster that I bought at a gun show for about $10.00 so I wasn't hurting if it didn't work. I checked with an old shoemaker back then and that was his advice. OJ's gloves are a classic case of wet molding leather...

I know on the George Lawrence sizing chart they list several holsters as "Colt New Service/S&W N Frame" with the barrel length being the only differentiation.

I carried a 5 1/2" Colt 1917 in a 5 1/2" holster made for the Ruger Redhawk. BTW, the holster was a Safariland Model 29 and it has a plastic track for the front sight. The shark fin FS on a New Service tends to eat up holsters.

Holsters for Ruger Super Blackhawks work well for 7 1/2" New Services.
