Added a 4th Colt to My Collection Today, the Colt MKIII Metropolitan 38 Spl.

I have been a novice Colt collector since acquiring my first Colt 357 in 2012. The style and functionality of these old revolvers really speaks to me. I always keep an eye out for 1950's-60s Colt 357's and Colt Troopers at the local gun shop and on a number of forums and auction sites. Recently I found a Colt MKIII Metropolitan 38 Special while looking for Colt Troopers. It looked similar to a Colt Trooper but the Metropolitan was completely unknown to me. Over the previous 8 years I had never heard of it or seen it . I did some research here and decided it was something I wanted to add to my collection. I won it for $365 shipped. When it arrived today I was very pleased. It has holster wear on the barrel and was carried and used to a fair degree but is in really nice condition overall. I can't wait to get it home tonight where I can take a closer look at it.

Some people would pay almost that for just the grips! You did well. Hope it shoots well for you.

The Metropolitan is a fine, heavy duty .38 Special revolver...essentially a non-magnum Lawman Mark III. I guess some Chiefs of Police had a case of magnumitis resulting in runs like the Trooper Mark III in .38 Special as well as the Metropolitan

I believe Snidely is correct. some chiefs of police back in the day wanted new guns for their departments but didn't want them to "Sound" too deadly so ordered them from Colt short chambered to the less magnumey sounding 38 special. Many departments in that day who had S&W model 19s forbid their officers from using 357 magnum ammunition. My Metro is extremely accurate.

You probably have a later production Metro Police.

The early Lawman, Metropolitan Police, and Official Police Mark III had Service grips and a narrow grooved Service hammer.
Later in production Colt began installing the wider checkered hammer and usually Target grips unless the gun was specifically ordered with Service grips.

These models were replacements for the older Colt models like the Trooper and Official Police that had gotten too expensive to make.
Unfortunately, law enforcement had begun moving away from fixed sight revolvers by that time, and S&W owned the LE market.

The up side is, the Metro Police as about as strong a medium revolver as ever was since it was built on the Trooper Mark III Magnum frame and cylinder and the .38 Special and +P ammo can be fired about forever in it.

The Metro didn't have the charisma of the Trooper Mark III, but it was an extremely durable and effective street cop's revolver.
