Are python grips suppose to have the serial number in the grips?

I bought this python used, but "looked" new in 1991. It is serial # V 173090. I figure it was built about 1980? It came with two sets of grips, the rubber with colt gold medalions, and the standard targets with the gold colt medalions that look like all the rest of them. Today I received a pair of faux ivory from Boone trading post. They look and fit good. I took off the wood ones and while there is a bunch of numbers in the grips, none match the serial number. Whats up with that?

I don't believe target stocks were numbered to a gun. One reason might be that fitting was not the same issue for them.
