    Re-Caliber 1895 Colt SAA Blackpowder

I just bought an 1895 Colt SAA Blackpowder that has been re-calibered to .38 special. I want to convert it back to .45LC. Can I install a modern barrel and cylinder and safely shoot smokeless cartridges? Next question.... Where can I find modern barrels and cylinders??

Modern barrel is different threads. You can convert back, but get some one who knows what they are doing to accomplish the task and test fire for you.
    Try Bob James Phoenix. Q
Just because the guns old and I'm old, don't mean your gonna win.

Yes, but stick to factory loads, no P+ stuff!
2nd gen bbl has same threads as 1st; 20 LPI, 3rd gen is 24 LPI and won't work. 2nd gen & some3rd gen cylinders have the removable bushing like the 1st, some 3rd gen cylinders have the cursed pressed in front partial bushing and different ratchets on the rear. If you rebarrel and recylinder, go with the 1st or 2nd gen parts. Bbls & cylinders show up often on ebay & GB.
My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

You can convert back to .45 but the frame is NOT approved for smokeless! Hate to see you blow the top strap off the thing.
    I don't mean to start the b.p. v.s. smokeless thing...just my opinion!

Why not convert it back to .45 and shoot black like it was intended?

    Thanks for the replies!

I appreciate all the help. I've heard that blackpowder is hard to get, more difficult to load, and it gets your gun super dirty. What if I press minimum load smokeless rounds for it? What do you guys think?

If you have it checked out after the conversion,I wouldn't hesitate to shoot cowboy loads in it.I've done it for years.Read some of Elmer Keith's book "PISTOLS".He was considered the absolute expert on SAA's.You and others will find it very informative.

2nd gen barrel and cylinder. or you can use a 3rd gen cylinder if you also use a 3rd gen hand to go with that 3rd gen cylinder. peacemaker specialist has parts give them a call. do a bing search for peacemaker specialist for more info.

I've been looking for barrels and cylinders for a couple days. eBay and gunbroker have a few in various conditions for $100-150. Coltparts have them for $300-350. Any leads on other places that would carry barrels and cylinders?
