And, as hoya74 notes, Brunner writes that this practice began in 1917, c. sn 250000.

There is no doubt that Dr. Brunner is THE definitive hammerless authority, but as often noted, "with Colt anything is possible".

Maybe Colt started the numbering on the slides for the Belgium contract and kept on doing it, because it made sense. Since they went away from the USA they may have "flown under the radar". Quien sabe?

By the way. Paging Mr. ei8ht!

Jim you also got one of those. Is you slide numbered?

I don't understand why the pictures got so small. Because they were not.

Hope they don't "shrink" this time.

The A in diamond is very lightly(and poorly) struck but is visible.

I sent a message to Paul asking if they have access to the Belgian 1903 contract which might specify the slide s/n marking.

Added early 1903 8-12-19 001.JPG Shown here is one of my favorite early 1903s - one of 16,000 made in 1904. This one was returned to the factory for refinishing around 1916 -1917 as indicated by the later slide markings (HARTFORD, CT vs HARTFORD. CONN), and the later Rampant Colt standing on an oval representing a latitude belt of the Globe. Gone is the early polished deep blue finish of the first model, replaced with the blued finish of that later period. Other older features have been retained such as the all blued barrel (most likely a NOS replacement with a brand new bore), the earlier plunge milled slide serrations and the lack of a "VP" usually found on the LH side of the trigger bow (started early in 1905). A final refinishing inspector used a "K" stamp of the right hand side of the upper trigger guard. The original unmarked magazine has also been refinished with its usually rough exterior now a later two tone with a smooth blue finish. The hard rubber original grips have been set aside (the grips screw has the only remaining "peacock" blue finish remaining) and shamelessly replaced with Colt MOP deep dish grips from that later period.
