Nice gun Jim. Here's one not often seen; it is an FN made Browning Model 71 .380 aka Model 1910/71. A victim of the Gun Control Act of 1968 which assigned a point system to qualify a handgun for importation into the US.

The BATFE Form 4590 is used to grade a pistol or revolver; requiring a minimum score of 75 to be importable. Such things as weight, overall length and height, caliber, single action or double action, target grips and triggers, all add up. Don't get a passing grade? Not importable!

After World War II, the US authorities procured several thousand FN 1922’s to arm the German railroad police (Bahnpolizei) in their occupation zone. By the time they were delivered, the US zone as such didn’t exist anymore, and the pistols went to the Deutsche Bundesbahn, where they entered service in 1951. The FN 1922 remained the Bahnpolizei’s standard sidearm until it was replaced by the Sig-Sauer P6 in 1978/79.

The Bahnpolizei did not fool around. (No German cops did) In 1972 my ex-wife was returning from a shopping frenzy at the big PX in Frankfurt. There was some kind of commotion and a couple of Bahnpolizei were chasing some guy along the platforms in the Hauptbahnhof. One of the cops yelled for him to stop twice, "Halt oder ich schieße!" He did not yell a third time. She said the cop fired once, the guy went down and they were all over him.

She didn't know what it was all about, but she was certainly more subdued around German cops after that.

After WWII one of the handguns adopted by the East German Police (VoPo) was the J. P. Sauer 38h. Like the Colt 1903 it was a "Hammerless" in having the hammer internal. Like the later Sig Sauer P Series the Sauer 38h had a lever decocker but it also could be used as a cocker. Each swipe of the lever changed the state of the hammer from cocked to decocked or decocked to cocked.

Here is a 1941 manufactured Sauer 38h that after being used in WWII had the Waffenamt scrubbed and replaced by the VoPo Starburst.

It is good that warriors such as we meet in the struggle of life, or death ---- it shall be life.” - Ten Bears - “The Outlaw Josey Wales”

Jim - here's my Beretta 1934, chambered in 9MM Skurt. (see slide) With matching numbers it is one of approximately 40,000 (of 60,000) ordered by Romania during WWII. Skurt is Romanian for "Short" as in 9mm Short, 9mm Kurz, .380 ACP.
