Another shoot ‘em up scene I like for the simple realism is the saloon scene in Appaloosa , again with Ed Harris as Virgil Cole. Just being signed in as sheriff, he and his deputy are called into the bar of the hotel to clear out 4 cowboys because a few of them are drunk enough to start using the floor spittoons for draining bladders. Virgil tells them to button up and gonna walk them down to the jail. They’re drunk enough to challenge and let him know they “ain’t going no where” and turn to face off. Virgil gives warning that if either pull on him, he will shoot them both. Deputy Everett Hitch all the while has his 8 gauge (wow - 8 gauge ) trained on the others. With inebriated courage they start to pull pistols and Virgil easily lays them out with his Colt and Everett’s 8 gauge rolls out the third cowboy who also pulled. The fourth cowboy threw hands up saying he didn’t shoot.
In my mind this seems realistic in considering how whisky couraged groups demonstrate poor judgment of their capabilities against law Enforcment today and do likewise when armed. Deadly force being used towards and against, not to uphold morals and beliefs or more dire circumstances.. just simply because one side said stop pissing in the floor and the the other said you can’t make me.

Never heard of the movie 'Open Range' but based on that chatter here I got the DVD from the library. Glad I did, really good western.

Since we've opened up from single actions a bit, I'm going to throw out the Matewan movie shootout. It was somewhat of a communist sympathizer's film but I liked it none the less. May be a single action in there somewhere.

Loved all the shooting in the 1966 movie El Dorado from the sawed off shotgun to them ringing the church bells with their rifles. Hard to beat a John Wayne movie for shooting.

Only other that comes to mind as being as good is in "Open Range". Both of these films illustrate the SA Colt very well, with close shots of the various guns that all seem to be real working single actions. Some have black powder frames, some cross pin frames. San Antonio has no reproductions, movie was made in 1945. I think Open Range may be the same, as Costner is said to have purchase and used is own original black powder Colt and a producer, probably made sure the rest were authentic.

Although I really like "Tombstone" with Kurt Russel, all those weapons look to be repros, while Costner's "Wyatt Erp" again looks like authentic Colts were used.
