This question assumes several facts not in evidence. But, in our hypothetical scenario, you can carry any handgun that you choose as a duty weapon.

I suppose this question is primarily directled toward those of us now or formerly in law enforcement. However, it willl be interesting to get comments/ opinions from across the entire spectrum of members here.

For my pick, as a practical matter, the 9mm Glock 17 Generation 5 as I’m Issued currently would be hard to beat.

Now based strictly on “want”, I’d carry my S&W Model of 1926 3rd Model .44 Special with a 4” bbl. Stoked with 200 gr. Gold Dots and speed strips or speed loaders, it would be a fantastic combo.

The floor is now open for discussion. What say you??

My duty gun was a Trooper Mk III, 4". If (and that would be earth-shattering) I were to carry on duty today I would want a New King Cobra with a 4" bbl.

My off duty carry was a nickel DS in .38, 2". Today I carry a New Cobra .38 2". It is next to my monitor as I type.

My duty pistol was a Glock 22 for the last 20 of my 37 year LEO career. I would stick with that.

If I was still working as a uniformed officer and I had my own choice in what to carry...it would likely be a 1911 pattern pistol such as my Combat Elite .45 or a Delta Elite 10mm. Each has power, accuracy, excellent ergonomics and reliability. I would give the edge to the .45 for controllability. For off-duty or plainclothes work I'd go with either a lightweight Commander or Defender...maybe my Glock 30 or 29 but I'd rather keep the same operating system for simplicity's sake...the KISS principle. If I needed something smaller or more concealable I'd go with my Kimber Solo Carry or a Kahr 9mm.

Bet...being honest...I also never felt under armed with a revolver either. I'm not one of those that thinks high capacity is supremely important...important yes...but not the most important attribute.

My "duty" gun was in the Navy, where every day a quarter of the crew was on duty (had to remain aboard overnight) in port. It would be every 4th day. When on watch, I carried a 1911. I'd probably do that today.

Despite carrying a Government Model Colt or a Commander in plain clothes for all of my LEO career and for over 10 years afterward, today were I able to do all that again (serve as a deputy sheriff) I would choose a Glock 41. It balances almost like the Government Model and actually feels like it recoils less. Off duty it would be the Glock 30S. Yes, I'm one of those un-enlightened souls who doesn't see the obvious superiority of the mighty 9mm. I'll just stick with the 45 ACP and take my chances.

would be a s&w 3.5" nickle 27 with winchester silvertips just back in the days when i started, great combo for up close and personal or to get me to the unit for my choice of 12ga 00 buck and slugs or M4 my opinion a auto, and I have carried many, are a pain you have to clean them ALOT when exposed to the weather on patrol.
unless your in a high crime area, revolver will work awesome
