Is the frame case colored. If so, those are really scarce. With those unusual sights, it is a real find!!
Probably a boys treasure. The rifle is in 22 short and made in 1893. I just got it and it had the sights on it, a Lyman No. 1 rear and a 5B front. Patent date on the front sight is 1888 and 1891. Makes me wonder if it's original from the factory. It's in great shape for a 126 year old firearm.

Very nice early 2nd Model. It does appear that the frame is case-colored. The buttplate would've been as well. Hope the bore survived...so many didn't.

Thanks guys. Terry, the receiver is case. The photo's don't show it well. The bore is frosted (not black) and has good rifling.

Yes, somebody, probably a kid,was the envy of their friends with how well they shot this gun, no doubt. I say that because I have some ancient Townsend Whelen article here somewhere where he put precision sights on a single shot .22 and it changed everything for him as to accuracy. My friend has a smoothbore slide action Winchester .22 he showed me 25 years ago.
I have this 1890. Someone before me made it a pistol grip and put on a longer stock that fits me well. Since it was already molested and in .22 WRF, I had it lengthen to accommodate .22 WMRF. My gunsmith was sure it was okay to do. I posted it before and someone commented it isn't safe. I haven't shot mag in it since however I still think it should be okay. I do have .22 wrf ammo for it yet. What do you think? The stock is checkered exactly like Winchesters, and it has a cheek piece!
Neat little Winchester! Here's one that's also uncommon in 1/2 nickel.

One is .22 short and the other is. 22 Long.
Here is a picture of mine with original case colors.
