    Ecsc

Please allow me a little nostalgic self-indulgence. While some of you were growing up out west riding horses, I grew up in Virginia Beach riding a surf board. Last weekend was the 57th. annual East Coast Surfing Championships. It also marked 50 years since I designed my first of nine ECSC logos (1969-1978). In the following ten years I designed many logos including art for the NRA Annual Meetings, 1980 IPSC World Championships logo and art for the Lafayette Gun Club of Virginia Inc., one of the largest gun clubs in Virginia. (see how I worked in gun related material!) In 1981 I started doing scrimshaw for Randall Made Knives, a 38 year relationship for which I feel truly blessed.

And now back to your regularly scheduled programming.

Never could figger out that surf board, so it was guns and horses for me.

Thanks for sharing your talents and expertise with us Rick.

    Take care, Duane

I tried surfing once...after the skeg hit me in the head I decided surfing wasn't in my future.

While other people were riding horses or surf boards, some Mid-West kids were "Running the woods".

This was just going into a woods area and walking it to see whatever there was to see.
Of course it was necessary to have a .22 rifle to carry while doing it.

My buddy and I spent many a hot summer day on an abandoned bridge over a diversion channel off the Mississippi River shooting Alligator Gars.
Alligator Gar fish are an ugly swordfish-looking trash fish. They can get huge, as much as 10 feet and 300 pounds, but the ones we saw were usually a foot and a half max.
This was a sport requiring marksmanship and visual skills. The fish are about the same muddy OD Yellow-Brown as the river.
They come up to the surface and sound quickly so you had to spot them and get on target fast.

It seems yesterday's kids had lower expectations of entertainment then today's kids do. Gar shooting required no electronics.
