    44-40 and 44 special

A few years ago Uberti made a SAA with 2 cylinders one in 44spl and one in 44-40, not made anymore. Does that mean if you had a 44-40 and had a 44spl cyl fitted for the gun you could fire both sizes thru the same barrel or would that create a problem? I have a chance to do just that and this is why I am asking.

I fitted a 44-40 cylinder to my 44spl Colt SAA and it works fine. Colt actually had a few models of SAA with both.

I have a chance to get a 44-40 and a 44spl cylinder not factory to the gun and just wondered if it would be a problem to shoot the 44spl out of the 44-40 barrel so thanks that solves that problem. Reason I asked was the bullet diameter is slightly different 44-40 being .427 in and 44spl being 429 in and I just wanted to make sure.

Barrel and chamber dimensions have varied considerably over the years. Measure your chamber mouths and choose your bullet diameter based on it. Take care, Duane

Its not 'a problem' for recreational shooting. If you have a reloading aficionado's discernment for accuracy you may go down the rabbit hole with bullet choices etc.

In recent years I'm to understand Uberti puts them out at .427 very consistently.

This is a fun combination, and hard to put together on the aftermarket. Taylor's and VTI get a shipment of maybe a hundred 44 spl cylinders once a year, and they sell out immediately. They always have .44-40 cylinders.

I bought a .44 WCF Colt New Service a few years ago, and discovered it's cylinder had been changed to .44 Special. It shoots very well with .428 sized bullets.

My Uberti pistol and rifle barrels measure .429". (6 of them) Slug your barrel and see what you have.

My Colt Sheriffs model has both cylinders and both work great. As long as the new cylinder is fitted properly you will have no problems.
