Hey folks, anyone seen a pythons blast shield with this kind of wear patterns? I have looked through countless pics and seen some with wear, but not this pronounced. Considering buying this one and just wondered if anyone had experience here...if it was an indication of having been shot ALOT, or any other mechanical concern...
I also pointed out the thumb piece mechanism...looks a bit more rounded to me than others Ive seen, but understanding that to likely be from the colt revolversmiths fitting the parts.
Appreciate any and all perspectives and thanks in advance.
Attached two pics, one that looks more "clean" and then the one I'm concerned with which has the wear areas and thumb piece areas pointed out....all other parts of the python in question look clean and period correct. Thanks again!
Added more pics of the python in question for additional context...thanks again!
The first arrow points to the top part of the side plate. It has to be filed down on the edge so shell heads don't snag there. The cylinder latch pin shows wear the more the gun is used.
Here is the recoil shield area on my 1955 Python, I do believe it is test fired only but the cylinder has been opened and closed some through the years so there is a hint of wear on the cylinder latch pin.
Thank you very much lbaker45...kind of affirms what I was thinking. That is a beautiful 55...what a find to be in such pristine condition!
Regard the pics I posted, if my intent was to shoot the python, not a crazy amount, but a couple trips to the range per year, would the wear on the blast shield I posted check you up from purchasing...in the around the low $2k for price?
Just trying to learn as much as I can...some is intuitive...as I suspected here, but I just don't have a good feel based on what I'm seeing as to what's considered light use with a lot of life left...and what was shot hard and put up dirty...then cleaned up at time of sale.
Always a risk with 40-50 year old guns...just trying to come at it with eyes wide open and would prefer to put my own wear on the pistol if at all possible. Appreciate your thoughts! Attached amother pic that shows hammer and a bit of the cylinder...turn line seems light to me...
The Python you are asking about hasn't seen hard use, the inside edges on the forcing cone look sharp. Hot loads tend to erode those edges right quick.
I think you are good to go on that one, check the timing and lock up but it should be fine.
almost looks like a new never used barrel at the forceing cone ....doesnt seem to fit the wear on the front of the cylinder...might just be the pictures though
And then go shoot it, and enjoy it. It WAS made to be shot after all. Have no fear, if it has already been used and you aren't collecting an unfired example, it wont hurt a darn thing. Pythons are an absolute pleasure with the right loads, and very accurate! They didn't become popular just based on their gorgeous looks after all.
