There's a lettered 1902 Colt SAA (.45 Colt) that I'm considering jumping on. Would $915.00 plus shipping and FFL fees be a fair price? Apparently the cylinder (stamped 822) is a first generation replacement. The backstrap, frame, and trigger guard serial numbers match. According to the seller, it has good timing and excellent lockup. No rust or pitting.
Proceed with caution. As Jim (coltsixguns) said, waaay too cheap. Ask seller for additional pics, then tell him you'd like to pick it up in person. That could flush out a scammer.
Per your question, 203xxx serial range begins smokeless powder.
I recommend you ask for pictures not shown on the website I sent you, or with one that has a current newspaper with it. This screams scam to me, especially if you had a WTB posted somewhere. I can't see the seller going from $2650 to less than a grand in two weeks.
Edit: Or contact the seller though the website I sent and see if you get the same deal.
Check out twaits post, "subtle changes in the colt single action army" on page 1 of this forum. If the gun is period correct, buy it asap. It should be going for 3x's that price.
i'd pursue it but 'tread lightly grasshopper'. what do they say? "if a deal looks too good to be true..........................."
good luck! for your sake I hope it's all for real, that would be a major score!!
