    Question about an end label

I am looking at a 1980 8" python, the gun seems to be in excellent condition, with box and papers. My question is about the end label, I can see a green label has been place over the original label. The green label gives the model I 3680 , serial number, description, and is from the custom shop with the crown symbol between custom and shop. If this was sent back to colt for something custom is this common practice to label over the original? The other note on the label says with custom sights,

Yes,green Custom shop label was done at that time. Need a clear photo to tell if it’s legit! There are many FAKE labels
put out by unscrupulous sellers and the numbers of boxes and labels are growing every day.

When guns are sent through the Custom Shop prior to shipping for extra work, the Custom Shop routinely added their label over the original end flap. The flap may not give too much extra information. This would be for new production custom work...not anything sent back to Colt for custom touches.

Years ago I bought my son a new 6" blue Python with the Elliason rear and undercut Patridge type front sight. The slip cover/styrofoam insert box had the bright green custom shop label over the other label.

That is exactly the type of sights on this gun, does this change increase the value much? I am now sure this is not a phony label, thanks for the help

Front sight blades are easily changed - I put a Patridge with a Call gold bead on my 3.5" Model 27 because I prefer that sight picture in a hurry.

If factory equipped it helps with the value but I doubt if by a large amount. An Archives letter will verify it along with the box...and as already stated boxes and labels can and are counterfeited.

A Colt Custom Shop model almost always will have at least some higher value then a standard model in the same condition.
It depends on what was done.
You might want to buy a Colt Archive letter to find out what was actually done by the Custom Shop.

Most of the custom features may be listed on the green label, but sometimes not all the custom work is on the label.
Your Custom Shop Python may have had other non-listed work like a factory trigger job.
An Archive letter will state what was done.
The letter would probably add to the value, especially if other custom work was done.

i am not sure why you are suddenly sure the label is real.....these labels are faked all the time to match the characteristics of the gun....just because the label matches the gun in no way relates to its authenticity

hopefully your label/box are real as it does add value to the package...(exactly why they are faked all the time)

I just noticed that SAA labels from late 90s are white, the handwriting looks genuine. They actually say “Custom Shop”
see pics. They are also handwritten or checked boxes. I have the 5-1/2” dual cylinder 45 box but the gun has a 4-3/4”
barrel! The gun arrived yesterday but not in my possession for 10 days. Both cylinders are numbered to the gun and the
serials are matching to the box. I did try both cylinders fitwise and they were timed correctly. The gun is about 98%
and the ACP cylinder has been fired the LC maybe test fired? I don’t know if the gun is rebarreled,I can’t tell or is the
label mistaken? The difference in price between mine and the full blue 4-3/4” gun is about $1500. I realize the full
blue is probably very rare but I personally don’t want a Colt that looks like a Ruger.
