It could be the lighting but the metalwork looks "soft" to me...I don't think Colt would have done it that way. The box label looks too good plus the handwriting is too neat...those I've seen the handwriting is rushed. It looks like someone tried too hard to make it look genuine.

Whoever polished it had a heavy hand, and generally, Colt did try to be more 'workmanlike' about their polishing than the aftermarket gun butchers did.

I'd pass, and look for something I didn't have to wonder about or explain - Colt made a helluva lot of them.

It fairly screams Chola makeover. Hyper-polished - and poorly so - and the box is most likely from Sparta, TN. In the process of screwing around with it, the 2 1/2 barrel could have been screwed on. No evidence remaining of being test-fired at the factory, and Colt's did not clean or polish that evidence off, so "someone" did. If you are serious, a call to Colt would reveal just what it was when it left the factory.

The worn front sight on a perfect top strap is a red flag to me.

The archives letter is "To whom it may concern". Aren't archives letters addressed to the person ordering it and his address?

I’ve seen a lot of Colt end labels from that time period and the label does not legit to me. As others have pointed out about the gun,it might be better to look for another one. Pete

Looks refinished to me, so I have to question the letter.
