    Colt Python 6" E Nickel 1977

Need some help verifying. A friend of my sons dad is selling a 6" Python that he says is stainless (asking $1900.00), the serial number would indicate it was made in 1977. I Know Colt started making stainless Pythons in the 80's. I'm assuming this has the E Nickel finish. Did they make E Nickel Pythons in 1977? What is the value (no box)?

That gun is too early for Enickel or Coltguard.

So what is it then? It doesn't look refinished or plated, and the serial number is 1977?????

Demands were made for other finishes beside Royal Blue, soover the years Colt offered the Python in Bright Nickel, satin electrolessnickel known as "Royal Coltguard, and in the early 1980's in satinstainless steel and in bright mirror polished stainless steel, variously knownas Bright Polish or Ultimate Polish."

    Python

"In 1981, Coltguard, a proprietary electroless weather-resistant plating, was also made available. The stainless Python was reintroduced in 1984, followed in 1985 by the super-polished stainless Ultimate Python, which was fitted with an Elliason target front sight."

It does appear to be e-nickel but it could have been done at a later time...it could also be hard chrome. Also...just because the Colt serial number lookup says 1977 doesn't mean that's accurate. I have a Detective Special that Colt's website says was made in 1939...an archives letter shows it was made in 1943.

I just looked at completed auctions on GB. The oldest E Nickel Python was from 1979 and serial number started with a V. Most on there are from the early 80's and serial ends with K.

Sometimes the archive letters can contain errors as well. I have a 1909 that lettered as shipped in 1902. The corrected letter says 1911.

granted the pictures are very poor but it looks like a refinish to me, and value it as such till someone could prove otherwise

    but it is NOT stainless

LOL...if it were offered to me as stated i would offer them $3000 if it came back as stainless if they would sell it to you for $1000 if it doesnt ....then call colt for the expedited letter (split the cost on the letter) ....

Good idea ttazzman. I spoke with a very helpful women at Colt's archive department this morning. She said no way is it either stainless or e nickel, way to early of gun. I need to go see it. It's probably just nickel. Thanks for all of your comments.
