Basically some came straight out of the Custom Shop with the Elliason Patridge sights … possibly many were built with standard sights and refitted before leaving the factory … and many were sent back for the Elli Pats. Unless labeled or lettered in regards to provenance, there are no way to say for sure.

During my police career I used a 6" Python with Elliason sights. I only used it in the service revolver class for PPC competition and eventually replaced it with a PPC sighted (extra high front patridge sight) L Frame S&W when they came out in the early 80s.

As above, some special edition Colt's shipped with Elliason sights, and a Colt could be special ordered with Elliason sights.
It's possible a Python might be returned to Colt for installation, but I suspect that would be rare.

Most Elliason sights were installed as after market additions by owners.
Unless you have some original documentation or an original Colt box listing the sights, there's no way to know if the sights were shipped on the gun unless you order a Colt Archive letter.
Note that if the gun was returned to the factory for installation Colt would have no record of that and the Archive letter wouldn't show it.

One way to know the sights are not original is that once in a while you'll see a gun with the Elliason rear sight but with a standard front sight. Colt always installed them as a set.
Another way is scratching or slight damage to the pins that retain the front and rear sights, indicating they were replaced.

Shot PPC for several years with a Ellison/Patridge sighted 6 inch, with a Walt Sherman trigger.

Very common as the sight fits many Colt revolvers and autos. Easily installed. Pete

I sent mine back in the early 90's and had Elliason sights installed, as well as a Tedford action tune. Great shooter.

What is the difference between Eliason and 'regular' sights on a Python? Thanks.

The Elliason front sight is undercut to give a very sharp sight picture and the rear is more minutely adjustable than the standard Accro...plus the Elliason also doesn't have a protected sight blade the Accro does as it's intended for target work...it also has a reputation for fragility which I'm not sure is justified.
