Hi, I'm new here, It was suggested I come here to find out from
the experts more about the Colt SAA. I certainly appreciate your help. The questions I like to ask are below.

Do most 1st and 2nd Gen barrels always fit on a 2nd Gen frame?

Note, Mine are Yrs. 1973 and 1974... SN# 66xxxSA and 69xxxSA I understand 2nd gen SN# go up to 73000SA. My concern is tooling in those yrs was not all the greatest because of colt machines getting old. So I wonder do all 1st and 2nd gen barrels fit later 2nd gen SN#. I liked to switch out one barrel to 7.5 maybe even to a 45 barrel and Cylinder. Note, Both will be shooters. My questions are:

  1. Where should I look for and get the best barrels and cylinders what's a decent price for original new or used?
  2. Do they still manufacture new cylinders and barrels or re-manufacturer any?
  3. What are the buyer beware signals to look out for?
  4. I saw a barrel on line that read "New Old Stock 1st 2nd Gen for $275." is that a fair price and Does that mean it will fit my 2nd Gen frame?

Thank you all for any suggestions... in advance, I appreciate your responses.

Welcome aboard.

1. 1st and 2nd gen barrels are the same 20 TPI x .695” + or- tapered thread, so they do interchange.

2. You can find barrels and cyls on ebay and gunbroker that run in the $150 each ball park for nicer condition. Some that have these are:

3. No new 1st or 2nd gen parts are made or re-man. Some Colt clone parts will work if you don't have to Colt parts.

4. You need to study and know what the correct parts look like. True 2nd gen cyls will have a rampant Colt logo on the rear face, for example.

5. That's about top dollar for a NOS barrel and if you confirm the threads are as I stated above, yes it will fit 2nd gen. Recognize that barrel addresses and caliber markings vary with the barrel vintage.

You're welcome. Actually the EMF cylinders, are quite nice and preferred because they have the genuine 1st gen 1/2" radius flutes and early 1st gen black powder chamfer on the front edges of the cylinder! Colt 2nd gen cylinders have neither of those. And EMFs are less expensive than even used Colt cyls.

Uberti cylinders are authentic as well except for the diameter which is .020" larger for extra strength than Colt cylinders and can rub the inside of the frame window, but not on all Colt frames.
