I ran across an engraved, nickel plated Colt Legend in a gun shop today. Looked as new but no box or papers. They didn't have it "tied down" so I assume they are selling it as fired. I can't find much information on this model. I'd appreciate any information you can provide.

Still looking for info on this model?

What little I've found on this model is summed up in this ad for on Julia. Any other reference is somewhat a repeat of the same information.
Pure speculation, but maybe back then Colt had someone willing to work in favour of special projects for particular organizations, and the PRCA had a handful done for finalists or champions during that years NFR?
Could be that so little exists for information just because there may have been a very minute number ever done. That be my guess. Kind of what the Last Cowboy was through Talo, just the PRCA one a drastically smaller number. And if not for finalists or contestants, maybe these were done as a run for the board members and top brass guys in the PRCA via ties with the NRA & Colt.
Best bet might be to try look up who sat on the board during that year and the few previous, and see if anyone could be gotten ahold of directly (if they'd be willing to chat some) May end up the only way to nail down anything definitive if the collectors aren't even up to snuff on this run.

I did find another reference to a Legend from another auction house
There has been one in a chainsaw/pawn/and gunshop in a small town nowhere close to anywhere for a year - if it's still there. It was last summer. No box or papers. Looks unfired but is not advertised as such as they don't know.

Well there's your answer then. It was awarded to the '96 champion Team Ropers, and will only be 2 in existence. That's why the collectors know zilch about 'em... unless one of the guys pawned them, and needed money (which can be common in rodeo) nobody would know these were done.
If I was good enough to rope competitively instead of just on the pastures at home, I'd love to have won a Colt like that. Buckle's are great, but a Colt for Champion-placing is a whole 'nother level. Wonder if the PRCA has done any since or if those were a one-off trial run thing.

I see more than two. The one in post #3 is serial number LEGEND0122, the one in post #6 is serial number LEGEND0207 and I found serial number LEGEND0055 on gunbroker now: https://www.gunbroker.com/Item/840825206
Perhaps the confusion was because the one in post #6, LEGEND0207, was a special one that was engraved with the champion's name on the barrel. The others don't have that. Here is the auction results which shows it sold for $2000 in 2014. I also showed a close-up of the letter on that gun because it notes that the engraving is machine engraving.
